I've tried plugging in different phones and plugging the phone cable directly to the phone rather than through the modem but the phone is totally dead each time. It was working fine, this is a recent problem. Any ideas?
PS I live in Turkey.

Ringing in from outside the phone appears to be ringing, not the engaged tone, but phone is actually silent.

Your DSL needs only one wire to work, while dial tone needs both legs of wires, so if you have a short circuit anywhere along the line both wires become one, or if you have a broken wire anywhere and only one wire is still connected your DSL will do just fine while your dial tone will not work, call into your number if you get a busy tone, that means that your line is shorted out, that might be caused by a faulty phone, remove all phones and call into your phone with all the phones disconnected, if you don't get the busy tone anymore, that means that one of your phones is defective and is causing the line to short out. you proballay have a short on your line inside one of your phones, check for dialtone at the network interface outside of your home, either gray or white box.. if there is dial tone there, then unplug each phone inside one by one untill you find the defective phone.. if there is no dial tone on that box, then call your local phone company repair.. dial tone requires both the tip + and ring - side to work, DSL can function on a single wire, and therefore not all the time when there is a trouble will your dsl be affected..

hi there your phone lineworks on a pair of wires. adsl can work on a single wire but your "phone" needs the two to be connected so that it has a return most likely cause is that one of these wires is disconnected either in your home or in the local network. you can take the faceplate of your telephone socket to see if anything obvious is dis or failing that phone your telephone company they can check it hope this helps

I live in the UK and had a similar problem - we got BT to check the line and they could not find a problem. After three days it just all fixed itself !!! was very annoying when it happened though
