My boyfriend has bipolar disorder and adult ADHD. He lives in cycles, and when he is up he gets hypersexual. I think this is great and encourage it! However, he always gets so ill afterwards, very depressed, finds it difficult to turn off, and sometimes gets into trouble, I don't know what kind of trouble. . Can anyone explain hypersexuality to me properly, and tell me if in encouraging my boyfriend to be sexual with me I am in fact making him dangerous, or dangerously ill? Thankyou.

Hypersexuality (nymphomania) is caused by a neurological disorder (bipolar disorder). A person who is clinically defined as suffering from hypersexuality has sexual desires that are so high, it is considered by most doctors to be an illness. Unlike the average person, he yearns for genital stimulation and will never be satisfied even after numerous sexual sessions. If his intense sex drive is causing him to become ill, encouraging this behavior will not make the situation any better. Trying to talk to him about it will not help, the only thing that could sustain him is medication and the watchful eye of a psychologist. Is he on medication?

Do you have any idea as to what dangerous things he may be doing? Usually those who suffer from bipolar disorder has lost their impulse control (a factor that explains the hypersexuality). They do not think before they act and they do find themselves in odd and dangerous situations. Maybe you should keep an eye on him to make sure he isnt doing anything harmful.

Im not sure if you want to hear this, but many people who suffer from hypersexuality seek sexual release from other places (especially if youre not around to satisfy his temporal urges). His impulsiveness (and hyper sex drive) could cause him to have sex (sometimes unprotected) with people (men and women) he does not know. But I do not know your boyfriend, so I cannot make that judgement upon him.

Being hypersexual means feeling like you need sex all the time. Some people with bipolar disorder have this when they have their up time. Your boyfriend should be on medication for his problems and if he is not things may get worse. By what you are saying my guess is that he is not taking medication. People with mental illness that do not take their medication usually get worse not better. Having sex with him or not having sex with him is not going to affect his illness, his illness will run its course no matter what you so. But he would be much more stable all the time if he was medicated properly. He actually sounds a lot like someone I know.

Hyper-sexuality is normal in someone who is bipolar. The sexuality is not the problem for you, it's being in a relationship with someone who is bipolar. This is not good for you, the troubles you have will never go away, if fact they will probably get worse. You don't need this in your life, find someone new.

You are not encouraging it in your boyfriend, it's a by-product of his disorder. You are just happy with the result at the time. That is very short sighted of you and will lead to misery in the end.

Leave him now, and move on. There are plenty of men who are very sexual, you just need to find one. This is not the guy for you.

I dont know anything about hypersexuality persay but i am in the believe that if there is any such a thing i'm in it. Being highly driven myself, but over all i'd say its harmless fun.

Ritalin is the drug of choice for ADHD paradoxically it is an amphetamine like drug. But it works. Lithium is probably the best drug for the treatment of bipolar disorder, which my ex wife suffers from. It is probably not a wise move to encourage ANY extreme behaviour in the manic phase, as these things tend to get out of hand. I had MANY years experience of such things, so please feel free to get in touch.

If that is one of the symptoms linked to his bi-polar and ADHD I wouldn't think encouragement would be a good idea.I would consult with his physician on this.It could be dangerous and maybe even fatal.(heart rate, blood pressure)
