I have been using a bite guard at night for several years to prevent me from grinding my teeth. My question is about cleaning the guard. Other than toothpaste, do any of you have suggestions for cleaning it? What has worked for you? What should I avoid? Thanks!

First off, DO NOT put it in the dishwasher. The high heat will warp it and it will be ruined. Trust me on this! Just use a "Polident" denture cleaning tablet about once a week, or more often if it seems to need more "freshening". Daily brushing with toothpaste should work just fine. Good luck!

My dentist stressed that I should never use toothpaste on my bite guard because it can cause the guard to scratch very easily. She said just to brush with a regular toothbrush under tepid running water.

I just use toothpaste and tepid water. Please do Not put it into anything hot as it may lose its shape. A friend of mine had that happen to her when a cleaning person decided to boil her bite guard without checking with her first! That was the end of her $700 bite guard. Please do ask your dentist for recommendations and do's and don'ts as well (or perhaps the dental assistant can ask him or her).

Try the tablets used to clean false teeth. They're almost tailor-made for your application.

Brush it regularly with toothbrush / toothpaste.
Soak it in mouthwash for a few minutes (not hours).
Wash it with soap and warm (not hot) water.

Put it in the dishwasher. Between the heat and the chlorine in the detergent, it'll kill everything.
