Well, if the Hong Kong phone book ( in truth from several years ago ) is anything to go by then the most common surname would be Yoo. Also a point of interest is that ( I am really not kidding you about this ) is that the most common first name is Fook.

Maybe that's why so many Hong Kong Chinese get the impression that their compatriots are so rude. Ask your new neighbour "What's your name ?" Answer "F... Y.. !"

Apparently (according to yahoo) in all of mainland China there are only 438 surnames.

I would say Johnson. In the middle ages it was normal to have a name like John Johnson and many people did have it, in the USA or in the UK.
