I was wondering if it is safe to add baking soda to cat litter. I have read that it helps to eliminate odor. I have bought pure baking soda (not the one made specially for pets) by arm and hammer. I thought it would be a good idea to get some feedback before I use it, as its just ordinary pure baking soda.

Better idea - Someone else mentioned charcoal. I have the perfect product that I've used for years and know dozens of other people that use it. It is a product called FRIDGE IT odor absorbers. It is a little purple cube with an incredible activated carbon filter inside that is really, really, great. It works so much better than baking soda and all those sprays and fragrances that just cover up smells and doesn't get rid of them. Also, alot of sprays have warning statements about being eye irritant. The carbon literally absorbs and eliminates the odors and works for a long time. Just place a couple clipped onto your litter box. I use this product everywhere including car, storage, closets, my fridge and also under sinks, near trash and have friends that use it on cat litter box and also diaper pails - it's that good. I really recommend it. You can buy it in kitchen gadget sections in stores like walmart and linens and things. I also think camping world sells it. Definitely worth trying.

No it isn't harmful and it works wonderful for controlling odor. We use the Arm and Hammer Scoop Away Cat Litter and love it, no smell! :>) I highly recommend it and forget about using pure baking soda, just use the Arm and Hammer one for litter boxes, no need to mix it or anything.

I would definitely say yes it is! I think it would be safe because they have Arm & Hammer cat litter at the store. I have personally purchased it and it took the odor away very quickly. Baking soda does help a great deal to eliminate odors but to be really safe I would ask my vet for a second opinion. :)

Good luck!

It works great! Yes it's safe. Sometimes I use it instead of the scented stuff. I like the scented kinds better, however it does effectively neutralize the odor. So if it's not a perfume you are looking for you are on the right track. Just put it in the bottoms of the litter pan and also mix it in with the litter. You can also add more as you scoop and replace litter.

Totally safe and it works very well at absorbing odors. All you need to do is place a layer of baking soda at the bottom of the litter box and cover it with fresh litter. You don't need to mix them together.

Yes; its quite safe to add baking soda in cat litter. Lots of cat owners do it and there has never been a report of toxicity that I have heard of.

I sprinkle a thin layer on the bottom of the liter box when I change it and I have done it for years. I have 2 cats and they are still living. It does help eliminate some of the odor.

I use the stuff in litter-boxes with good results.
I have heard of some cats who will wash it off their paws after stepping in the stuff and spit it up, but that's harmless and easy to avoidby just mixing the soda well into the litter.
