how would you write tanjoobi in katakana? Im not aware of any "jo" in the katakana chart

Belie is right. It's タンジョウビ(katakana) 
たんじょうび(hiragana)
誕生日(kanji).

L line(sound) is same as R line. Actually there is no exact R sound in Japanese.

Tanjoubi in katakana would be written as タンジョウビ, but it's a Japanese word and doesn't normally appear in katakana.
By adding "yo" to "ji" you create the sound "jo". It's more often see in hiragana as たんじょうび or in kanji as 誕生日.

tanjoobi is usually written in kanji but if you need to write it in katakana it is ji and small yo which makes jyo. To get ji use the shi character with ten ten ( the small dots) " which changes the sound to ji.
