No, I'm not trying to be funny or insulting.

Not too long ago, I addressed this woman in a store whom I initially thought was a man. Very short hair, no makeup, jeans, t-shirt, nothing to suggest femininity whatsoever. I referred to her as "sir" and she about went ballistic. "I am NOT a 'sir', I'm a 'ma'am!!! How dare you? Blah blah blah..." All I could do was apologize over and over again. So embarrassing....

Anyway, has this ever happened to you or know someone it has happened to? How did you deal with it or she deal with it? And how did the other person who addressed you as "sir" react when he/she was corrected?

yes, I was once stopped from going into the ladies restroom by a woman who cam up behind me and grabbed me. She said you cant go in their mister. When I turned around she saw big boobs, and lipstick and she almost fainted. I had short hair and a hat on with jeans and a t shirt

That's the least offensive thing to be called.
When I had short hair I got called butch, dyke, lesbo....etc. etc.
Those ticked me off a tad....
But sir. Well, not really...I'm skinny. And when at work I have the same uniform on as everyone else. So if my back is to them....it happens.
Same with men with long hair!
