My son (2 yrs.) won't swallow certain foods, such as fruit, vegetables, and some meat. He'll chew it up and then spit it out. I don't think he dislikes the food/flavor because he'll continue to put that food in his mouth (rather than spitting it out and not continuing to eat it).

He's been doing it for a while--since he's been eating table foods. For a while, I thought it was just a phase and he'd grow out of it. However, it has been about a year. I try to discourage the behavior, by telling him to swallow his food. I don't want to be too harsh, though, because I am afraid it will influence him not to eat fruits/veggies at all.

Does this sound normal? Have you had this experience? What should I do?

Yes, very normal... kids experiment with eating as much as they do anything else!

my son did the same thing. He turned 2 in Jan. He usually ate most of the food and then started to chew and spit. We figured out that that is his way of saying he was done. Once he spit out the first bit of food we took his plate away. The problem solved it self in a very short time after that. Now we taught him to say "done" and hand us his plate when he is done.

Good luck

I wish I had more advice for you, but rest assured, it's normal. I'm having the exact same problem with my 20 month old boy. I'll be checking back for an answer myself! ;o)
You know, I remember my cousin telling me that she had the same problem with her son. She just wiped his mouth after every time he spit food out (he HATED his mouth being wiped). eventually he associated the two and stopped. Maybe we should both try this!

mine does the same. alot of veggies or if he takes too much in his mouth. I make him spit in the trash. I wont let him spit it in my hand or anything. one thing that helps is when I ttell him to take a bit and swallow then monitor him taking another one after he swallows. sometimes he just keeps shoveling and then cant chew it or swallow it.

definately normal.
