Boo is a papillon puppy, and not yet fully leash trained. She pulls, which is why I don't want to use just a collar, but her harness is rubbing away the fur behind her front legs. We've had a different harness, the type make of what leashes are usually made of *i beleive the term is webbing, but i don't beleive everyone would know that* and she chewed thropugh two of those.

Are there other options for walking small dogs?

Check out the dog whisper. Your dog is sturdy and the correction doesn't need to be heavy or prolonged. The leash is actually a great option. When you put the leash on... you give all the direction, you tell the dog what to do with calm assertive energy. Corrections are simple a quick pull up on the leash and you move to give the dog direction. Any time the dog does something you don't want, correct it with that quick pull or a verbal cue. If you want the dog to play, leash is off, or not held at the least. The pup will test you... she expects and wants you to lead.
Best of luck to you.

Boo is pullingBECAUSE of the harness. They put harnesses on sled dogs so they will pull. Get her a sturdy buckle or snap collar and train her to walk on a loose leash. Imagine you have no leash, how would you get the dog to stay with you. Talk to the dog, give em treats, act goofy, change directions etc. That's how you train a dog to walk with a leash. Practice in a safe area with no leash.

Oh, good grief. Your dog doesn't need a gentle leader at this point. Sigh.

Try looking for a sighthound collar that's padded - sometimes called martingales. http://www.karenskollars.net/collars/collars.html has a great stock of ones that you can custom design. I'll never go back to any other type of collar. They are so gentle, don't rub, and don't come off. You'll have to continue with the leash training regularly, but these are less harmful than a standard collar.

Also, how is Boo chewing through the harnesses? She shouldn't be left alone with them on. There are also new microfiber harnesses that rub less and are quite stylish. My local pet food store (locally owned and run) has them, they look kind of like these: http://www.teacupspuppies.com/dogcollar33.htm

Good luck to you! : )

It seriously takes less than an hour of training to get your dog to accept a leash. I did it with a Boston Terrier. I would just do it and solve the problem. Us treats and happy voices, put on a snug collar and lead your dog with a treat saying "lets go" or something like that. It will work. Just patience and persistence and be consistant!
You can do it.

there is a product called "Premier Pet Gentle Leader Training Dog Collar", it goes over the face and works great, it controls the animals head so they don't pull. I used it on my dobie and with in months, he was trained and I no longer need to use it. It does not hinder the mouth/jaw in anyway. as far as a leash that can't be chewed through, chain is the only thing I can think of.
I hope this helps.

You should buy a harness with a thicker band, also if you can find one, get the kind with the padding underneath to keep it from rubbing her raw. You will want to make sure that the collar and the harness both are nylon, which are pretty strong.

a extra small or small size gentle leader.

they are head collars, it looks kind of like a muzzle, but it isn't, the dog retains full use of her mouth. This works best for dogs who pull or who can't wear a regular collar on walks. It comes with a training DVD.
