I am thinking about buying a Marlin Camp 9 repeating rifle. It is a rifle chambered in 9mm (a pistol caliber).

Legally speaking - No you do not need a permit to purchase ammo.

Some stores can request a permit, but it is not a legal obligation. If you go into Wal-Mart or whatever gun-store, and they ask, tell them its for your Marlin 9mm Carbine and not a pistol.

There was a proposed law requiring you to show permits to purchase ammunition, but never made it out of committee.
You should not have to show any permits for purchasing any ammunition.
