I'm moving to the beach soon, and, consequently, a big city. I want a big dog for company and also for protection, but I also want to be able to take him to the beach and have fun.

Any suggestions?

Any type of retriever normally loves the water. Although let me be the first to say, I had a chocolate lab, who was terrified of water, but my golden loved the water. He would swim out further than I would to go fetch something. The difference between the two is age. My golden was 6 months and my lab was 3 years. I think if you introduce a younger carefree puppy to the ocean you'll have better results. But I would definitely say some sort of retriever. Good luck:)

No one can answer this question for you. You haven't told us anything about your work schedule, your financial situation, your lifestyle, your activity level, your home situation, etc. Any answers you get will just be uneducated guesses from children telling you their favourite dog - dogs that may be a terrible match for you.

The best thing you can do is visit a shelter or rescue group and see if a dog fits your needs. http://www.petfinder.com The next best thing is to watch a dog show - they are constantly on Animal Planet and USA and write down maybe 10 breeds that appeals to you. From there, visit http://www.akc.org and go to the "breed" area. On the left will be a link to the breed flyer, breed club, and breed rescue group. Click on each one and learn as much about the breed as possible.

From there if you decide you want a purebred puppy, read sites like

http://dogplay.com/gettingdog/index.html...
and
http://www.geocities.com/bluegracepwd/wh...

to help you find a reputable breeder.

Good luck to you

Do you have a beach that would allow it? Sadly, the vast majority of beaches forbid dogs. If you get one that allows dogs i'd choose a sporting breed like a lab or golden. both love water and swimming and doing things like playing ball and frisbee.

Weimeriners, Labs, Goldens, any sort of mixed breed, Pit bulls, American Bull dog, Dalmations.

Stick to the medium - large breeds. They won't get washed away (LOL) and they are able to run and play. Giant breeds are more loafers. WONDERFUL dogs but not as active.

Good Luck

Either a Labrador or Weimeriner. They are decent sized dogs. Both are bred for hunting and an outdoors life style so they should both adore the water and the beach. Good luck!

Golden retriever or labrador. Big bouncy dogs but very gentle. Very similar to each but the the golden is the hairier version! They are very friendly with a big waggy tail! I used to have six Golden Retrieves when I was breeding them and they used to love the beach

I had a German Shepard that LOVED the beach. A friend of mine had a lab and a border collie that loved the beach as well. Hope that was some help.

Labradors are great for the water, not so much for protection, they are sweeties. but they may make someone leary of approaching. Shepards like water, well the few I knew did. Just be careful, if you want a bigger protective dog that means you have to be the dominant one, make sure you can handle that.

A BOXER!!!!! No doubt. They are the most loving dogs ever. They love to run and just live off of attention. Their the sweetest dogs. The males actually grow to a pretty nice size so protection is possible. Also boxers are easily attached to their ower and I have found my male boxer in fact attached to his daddy more than me...lol Boxers are perfect!!!!
