A little of both - you can make your own fortune but the car driven by the illegal immigrant with no licence and no experience who mounts the kerb is out of your control.

Both, if we act right. I believe that every person has a destiny, or more properly a set of "natural born aptitudes" which if we train ourselves to perceive, by not interfering or letting it flow... Then we should later develop our own tools for influencing the course of our life based on those aptitudes. In a sense we are slaves, for we are "serving" that aptitude, but on the other hand that alone may entitle us to gain power over our lives and become mastes. If a person strays from it´s course or natural aptitudes, it will very likely be lame and unhappy. Check on Crowley´s Law of Thelema for details.

Both. Lets say, you are working now for your future destiny, and whatever result that you are having now out of your hands, is due to your previous work.
Just like nobody hankers after distress, but we have experienced, distress is forced upon us. So similarly, whatever happiness you are destined to get, wherever you remain, you'll get it by destiny.

We have freedom of choice, we don't all have an equal start but the amount of effort we put into life governs what we end up with.
