MTV is to blame for for the looks based music industry. Videos ruined careers for those not focused on portraying a certain image or putting on a pretty face. American Idol states that they are looking for the whole package - looks and talent. Plus, I'm sure people that call in are basing their votes on how someone looks as well.

As sad as it is I think some people do base it on looks and not personality or singing.
Plus Simon always has a something to say about the contestants outfits weather it be good or bad And i think people base their opinons on that.
Personally Chris Sligh is my favorite!!

They aren't all good looking remember, ruben studdard and fantasia? An american idol should be attractive, but they have to have an awsome voice.

Clearly not - there are several winners I do not consider attractive. I'd only consider Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood actually attractive (Rubin did NOTHING for me . . .)

this season there is an usually high number of very physically attractive contestants. however, as you see, its not just physical features that makes an idol 'attractive'...it's their personal appeal as well...and can they sing and entertain.
