I'm a runner. I've never had this problem before. But when I lift my right leg where the leg attatches (near the groin area) I get sharp horrible pain and it will last until I move my leg back. I hope this made sense but I'm hoping a person who knows a lot about sports medicine will answer this and follow me up. Don't be afraid to e-mail me.

Why wouldn't it hurt when I run and just when I'm sitting and I lift my leg?

Sounds like you could have a pinched nerve, possibly in your lower back, google sciatic nerve pain, and see if those symptoms are similar to what your experiencing. If you are a runner and in good physical condition then hopefully it is just a flair up and with rest and try applying heat and cold alternating it may never happen again, then again you may have to deal with it on and off always. Be sure you always stretch and warm up good prior to your workout ( I'm sure you know all that). Well I hope this gives you some insight, be sure to contact your Dr. and feel better.

Probably a knot in the muscle - when running it pulls more often.

Much pain is from muscles below is an example of what may help (based on headaches).
Begin with a couple swigs of molasses or a couple of bananas (natural muscle relaxers) daily - magnesium (which regulates many things in the body) and potassium (a needed building block for muscles).
Drink at least 1/2 gallons of water per day. Running a body low on water is like running a car low on oil is the analogy the head of neurology at UCDavis told my husband about 10 years ago.

Now to the cause - muscles - your back, neck shoulders and head have tender spots. They are knots in the fibers of the muscles called trigger points. It makes the muscles tight which makes them press on nerves and other things causing the pain.

The cure - start with a professional massage, (if this does not do it you probably need a chiropractor as well) you will also want to go back over any place you can get to 6-12 times per session up to 6 times per day rubbing (or lightly scratching on your head) every where that is tender until the knots go away. The place where the skull connects to the spine press up under the edge of the skull (to get to those muscles).

For more information read The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook by Davies. It teaches what to do and where the pain comes from.

it sounds like you may have sprained the groin area. do you always stretch before you go out for your run? this is very important!

at any rate i would get a referral from your doctor to see someone in sports medicine if he thinks the same..the reason i say this is because your going to probably have to go through some minor form of physical therapy and this is going to require a referral.

You need to see a doctor. It could be a muscle, a pinched nerve, the bursa in the hip or even a problem in your spine. He is the only one that can tell you and the pain means you need to be seen when it is that bad.

Go see a doctor.
It's not broken or anything.
But I think you might have pulled a muscle.
