Because something eternal has no beginning and no end. So if you're going to be in heaven for eternity (or some other imaginary candy-land for that matter) then your "soul" must have been somplace before you were born. Where?
And why don't you have any recollection of it?
For that matter, when you die and go to "heaven" will you have any recollection of life on earth?

Diane,
Way to dodge the question there.
Next time maybe you'll actually answer. But I'm not holding my breath...

So for the most part the answer is;
"Um... let's talk about something else!"
Honestly with the level of obfuscation that you guys are tossing out right now, I'm surprised this question isn't invisible...

I will answer the meat of your question and leave your pettiness aside.

We are eternal upon creation/birth. Otherwise all the potential eggs a woman has should have a soul tucked away. There is no before holding area though I believe there was a movie "The Seventh Sign" that called the holding area the Gaulf or something similar.

I am sure you will get this scripture again, but even though it is a Psalm I think it expresses what we believe. That is God gives the child spirit as they are born. From that point on we are eternal beings with two destinations to choose from.

Psalm 139:13
For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb.

For the last part of your question I do not know if we do have recollection of life on Earth. I know you will have to have full knowledge at Judgment so it seems likely that you will continue to have it, but you will also know fully as you are fully known.

oh my dear, how you do love to limit God. Each soul was part of the breath and mind of God and as such had no beginning because God had no beginning - in that sense the soul is eternal from the "beginning" - however, what most Christians mean by the eternal soul is the fact that it will have no end. It exists somewhere in eternity forever - and that is MUCH more important to you than the eternal "beginning" part don't you think? After all, you can't do anything about the eternal "beginning" part but you have a direct impact on the eternal "end" part of your soul. That part is determined by your choice.

It appears that no one who has answered has had a definitive answer, or even the ability to agree with the others before them. They seem to just answer vaguely or dodge the real question.
It's funny how adept people are at making religion up as they go along when they don't have the unyielding support of their precious scriptures, or when their scriptures are self-contradictory.
How can Christianity be the "truth" when there are so many interpretations? This implies that the majority of those posting do not know the fundamental properties of the things they are trying so hard to "save."

No one can answer where their soul was before we were born. Not Christians, atheists, Muslims, etc. However, as a Christian, I know that God knew me before I was ever in my mother's womb, and the fact that He knows is alright with me. In Heaven there is no sorrow or pain it is only peace and happiness. I don't concern myself with "am I going to have any recollection of my life on Earth" I just try to live my life with love to others and happiness so that I can make it to Heaven.

I believe in God. God created the Heaven and Earth from nothing. He created my soul when I was conceived. That is what I believe.
I don't know if we will remember Earth in Heaven, no one knows this for sure, but I hope I do. I would like to remember some things from here because I believe in Heaven I will finally have the knowledge to understand why some things happen the way they do.

How could we have been around b4 our parents put us together? The 'Spirit' is eternal when we receive Jesus but the flesh on it's own merit is corruptible. Yes we will know our people and other famous people there who knew Jesus but we will want to fade out this menial life compared to that one. An interesting read is 'Intra Muros' a short booklet on the Internet for a 'glimpse of heaven'. Good Question.

First it is a wrong perception you have of a soul...The soul is the marriage of the body and spirit and the spirit is eternal not omnipresent. Eternal simply means everlasting.
Not sure what all the confusion is about but heres the word of God

Gen 2:7 And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.

True, eternal does denote no beginning and no end. God and Jesus are eternal in this sense, and the Word makes this very clear.

However, I do not think we have a word that denotes a beginning, yet no end. We will dwell in "timelessness" and we do not know another way to express this in our limited human language. Most of our words, such as "forever" seem to be tethered to the idea of a time line... ie lots and lots of time. Well, this is not true. Eternity is outside of our physical limitations of space-time. Eternity is a dimension that looks down at the timeline. We are not sure what that is going to be like. Paul said it would be illegal for him to try and describe what he experienced. In fact, he could not even attribute it as being "him". He had to refer to it like it was another person altogether. I'm afraid we are in the same quandary for being "at a loss for words."

well, if eternal means no beginning and no end, then our terminology is erroneous. I am not embarrassed to admit that. Maybe we should use a different word. God is eternal. He has no beginning and no end. We have a beginning, yes. But when we die, our soul lives on.

The doctrine of the Immortal Soul does not come from the Bible. It comes from the Catholic Church, who got it from pagan Rome and Greece, and handed it down to the Protestants. But Christians who read their Bible know better. Scripture says that "God alone hath immortality". Immortality is a gift that is given by God only to the Righteous upon Christ's Return. Until then, humans have no "immortal soul".
