As christians we are suposed to help people in need. If you see somebody asking for money, are you supposed to give them money all the time you see them? is ok to give a couple of dollars or give them most or all we have at that moment? Times are different this days and I heard stories of people that got hurt while trying to help others or give them money. As christians what are we supposed to do?
Matthew 25:42-48
42 For I was hungry, and you didn’t feed me. I was thirsty, and you didn’t give me a drink. 43 I was a stranger, and you didn’t invite me into your home. I was naked, and you didn’t give me clothing. I was sick and in prison, and you didn’t visit me.’
44 “Then they will reply, ‘Lord, when did we ever see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and not help you?’
45 “And he will answer, ‘I tell you the truth, when you refused to help the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were refusing to help me"

Yes christian means "Christ like" so your duty is to help others, however giving money may not be the best way. Some take advantage others in this way. The bible says we should have genuine love for eachother. Look at what Jesus did. Did he give people money? No, he showed a genuine love for others and aproached them with a humble attitude. You should always want to help others, but just be careful cause not everyone is safe to help. And it is not selfish to think about how helping a person might affect you. For exaple, you wouldn't want to just go pick up some stranger and let him move in. It could be a danger to you and your family. Sometimes we have to think hard about the best way to help some one. Mybe if they're sick, you can help them contact the right doctor for their situation.

You have to do this IN BALANCE and AS THE SPIRIT LEADS. (In other words, pray about it, open your heart, and wait for God to direct you, because you have to be able to discern between true need and usery.)
For example: sometimes God is trying to teach somebody to depend on Him, so He allows them to come across hard times. If we keep bailing them out of their messes, then they can't mature as Christians so that God can use them to help others someday. We are NOT supposed to continue to help people who keep ending up in the same mess because they keep making the same wrong choices - even if it's a family member. They don't want really want help or they'd make better choices. But if you see a homeless person on the street, take him/her a sandwhich. Don't assume they're out there because they are too lazy to work. Most people aren't homeless / jobless by choice. If you see somebody stopped along the side of the road with car problems, you can at least call the police and let them know somebody needs help. You're right - it IS dangerous in this day & age, but what if it's a mother with small children? If you have a widowed mother, it is your godly responsibility to make sure her needs are being met. Donate to legitimate charitable organizations on a regular basis.
The bottom line is, people need to see that Jesus is alive, and as CHRISTians, it is OUR responsibility to let them see Him in us in as many ways as possible.

I would suggest you direct the person to a homeless shelter or other organization that can help them and then donate to that organization. Your money will reach a greater number of people and you will know that it is used wisely.
There are more effective ways of helping people than simply giving them all your money.

If a person is starving, feed them.
Do all that you can, but do not give them money.
It has been shown that many make their living begging.
My favorite cartoon shows a rich man smoking a cigar floating in his pool on a plastic raft, and reaching for his social security check handed him by his butler, on a silver plate.

I think that to help someone you don't have to give them money.
Pray for them.
Buy them food or clothing.
Money can buy tehm alchol or drugs.
I was in Washington DC once and my friend and i seen a homeless man and we gave him money and then he walked straight over to the liquor store.
So if you're going to help them i suggest give them the food or clothes not money.
And I also think that God knows when we can or can't give so if it feels right and you feel him telling you to then go for it. Even if it's hard.

It's best if they're asking for money to take them and feed them. Clothe them. Your scripture reference doesn't say "give them money." Money can be used for anything, even alcohol, drugs, etc. Help fulfill their basic needs.
