Don't people know who led the battle for abolition of slavery? It wasn't baptists or methodists, it was QUAKERS. And I'm not talking about the southern kind, but the original kind based in Pennsylvania (William Penn, the founder of said state, was a Quaker.) If any organized religion ever worked hard for the decent treatment of blacks, it was the Quakers. Every African-American in the country should do a little research on the matter.

Interesting premise.

Are you a Quaker? Have you ever met a Quaker?

I have. He was a very nice fellow. Ironically enough, he was almost completely unaware of his church's history in the abolitionist movement. He told me that he thought such a thing was probably very likely. But he thought that it was also ironic since he knew tons of racist Quakers growing up.

Now I'm sure there are even more non-racist Quakers to be sure. However, from the picture this fellow painted, Quakers might have done what they did out of principle. That is to say, they thought slavery was evil, even if they still didn't care to be around black people.

All in all, they wouldn't be the first church to contradict itself over issues like race.

I wrote an article about it. I know a lot more than you.

No, they should not be forced into any belief system.

Every African American has the right to what ever faith they are called to. They shouldn't be shoe horned into something just because you say so.

There are no "southern" Quakers. There is Orthodox and there is Hicksite.

If you're going to insist on something you should at least use the proper term. They are the Society of Friends. Quaker was a term that the Puritans made up because they felt the Friends religious ecstacies were bizarre. Quaker, Shaker. What ever.

William Penn was of the Society of Friends.

They also launched the campaign for equality of women so I guess by your line of thinking all women should be Friends as well.

I will look into that to find the validity. Just because a Quaker help abolish slavery doesn't mean a Black should become the same.

Is this another way of saying Blacks are not welcome in mainstream America?

I can make silly stretches as well.

Quakers beliefs are so kewl. If it weren't for the never have sex part, I'd soooo be a Quaker.

and I wasn't aware of their roles in abolishing slavery. I guess you learn something new every day.

I like the fact that they are anti-violence and seek god inside.

They should be thankful for the efforts of the Quakers, but that doesn't mean they have to follow their beliefs.

What I am is what I choose to be now.
I'm not baptist, methodist nor would I want to be Quaker.
I could be the descendant of a Nigerian, Angolan, Senegalese or Ghanaen...but I would probably never know..so I don't worry about it.

So, they should embrace a faith not because they believe it to be true, but because others of that faith did what they saw as their duty to God? I don't think so.
