I have a dental discount plan so with that the price of the crown itself is $400 but then the dentist wants to charge an additional $225 for the "lab fee". If that is customary then so be it but it seemed kinda high to me. Total cost of the crown after my dental discount plan is $720.

Do you want the fee the lab charges the dentist or what the dentist charges the patient?

I'm still a little confused with the extra lab fee on top of cost of crown. If I'm reading that right, it's wrong. There is only one cost of lab fee for a "specific type" crown to be made. The lab charges no other fees or hidden fees, just their standard PFM or PFG and they are all with in a few dollars of each other, unless your using full gold then it's by weight and based on what the price of gold is that day or a speciality crown like impress or bio 2000 which are higher prices due to gold or difficulty working with. So anyway back to "What the lab charges the Dentist (this will shock you) average crown $105.00 and if the dentist does a lot of work with him there may be a discount of anywhere from 5-10 dollars off that. So, the dentist doesn't just hand the lab and an impression and say "make me a crown," he has some prep work to do by removing the enamel off your tooth and all the impressions and making you a temporary, so he does deserve a little something, but not $720.00 for a "discounted crown." I'm sorry but there is no way that fee would work for me. Although it does depend on where you live also, larger cities have higher prices just as smaller ones do just as good work but get less money for their job. The average cost of a crown "without any discount" is anywhere from $600.00 to $700.00 slightly higher if there is a build up involved (usually another $100.00 added on) and depending on the dentist in my city and I am in a large city. So I would shop around if I were you and see just where your "discount" is with this dentist. Sorry I couldn't say all is great with this quote, but too many family members in dentistry and dental labs to tell you differently. Hope I've been of some help and that you will look around a little for a better price. No sence getting a "discount" when the price is "jacked up" somewhere else taking it away from you. Sure does make me glad that my solid gold molar crown cost me a big $50.00 just a few years ago, love getting my dental free! Sorry, had to rub that in a little.

Sorry I had to edit what I said a minute ago, was busy and can't think, type and speak at the same time. I've got to stop doing that! So please re-read above and e mail.

umm maybe about 50-80 dollars but the mark up is high, Thats what the dentist pays the lab. Then they charge a fee on top of that. But I wouldnt got for a high noble metal I would go for a porcelin fused to gold it's a bit more but so much better for your gum.

Dental Lab Fees

I would pick the porcelain for all of them. Do not get an inlay! Go ahead and have that tooth crowned as well. Gold is the strongest crown that you can get but unless you are going to be chewing on rocks then you will do just fine with the PFM crowns. If you smile really wide you will be able to see the crowns if they were gold. The gold is also more expensive than the PFM.

This is exactly why I am so negative about so-called dental discount plans.

Even "if" you can find a dentist who takes them, they must make up the discount amount somehow. No one can stay in business writing off substantial percentages of their normal fees.

In a normal fee-for-service dental practice, the lab fee is included in the price of the crown. A dentist who discounts the normal fee is not going to make a profit and must therefore add a hidden fee.

It is still my opinion that these plans are a bad investment.

It probably depends on where in the country you live,
but around here the lab fee is @75 and the fee the
dentist charges is @600.

This is a very complex and time consuming procedure
which explains the high cost.

Depends on your dentist. Here in DC that cost about $600-900 w/o insurance. Myself, I have all mines fused to gold. I have a general price list at home.
