I wonder how many people here who are so supportive of the gay community have actually served in the military. If you have never worn the uniform of the U.S. Armed Forces you are in no way qualified to tell those of us who ARE in the military how to defend this nation and who we should or should not allow to be a part of our team. I've seen firsthand how the presence of homosexual men and women in military units undermines morale, teamwork, good order and discipline -- these are throwaway/meaningless terms to civilians but they are words that soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines LIVE BY. We have to be able to trust each other with our very lives, and anything that gets in the way of that trust is a problem. Besides, this is STILL a country where the law operates by the rule of the majority, and the homosexual population comprises less than 1% of American citizens (not to mention the fact that well over half the population deems homosexuality as an unacceptable lifestyle), so it's time to recognize that We the People have spoken.

This is not a new idea. It was practiced in ancient Greece in 379 AD.

From Wikipedia:

"The Sacred Band of Thebes was a troop of picked soldiers, numbering 150 pederastic couples, which formed the elite force of the Theban army in the 4th century BC. It was organized by the Theban commander Gorgidas in 378 BC, played a crucial role in the Battle of Leuctra.

The reasoning behind the Sacred Band was that lovers would fight more fiercely and more cohesively at each other's sides than would strangers with no ardent bonds. According to Plutarch, the inspiration for the Band's formation came from Plato’s Symposium, wherein the character Phaedrus remarks:

And if there were only some way of contriving that a state or an army should be made up of lovers and their loves, they would be the very best governors of their own city, abstaining from all dishonour, and emulating one another in honour; and when fighting at each other's side, although a mere handful, they would overcome the world.

For what lover would not choose rather to be seen by all mankind than by his beloved, either when abandoning his post or throwing away his arms? He would be ready to die a thousand deaths rather than endure this. Or who would desert his beloved or fail him in the hour of danger?"

Maybe we should send a band of gay soldiers to fight in Afghanistan and Iraq. Then the homophobic Taliban elements can exclaim, "We're losing to a bunch of guys who spend more time on hair and skin care than my wife?" Maybe this is one way to win: psychological operations.

I think that if they are gay then they should say something. They should be considerate of other peoples feelings. We are all different, some more than others. I respect gay people, because I beleive they struggle more, but I also respect people in general and we all have feelings.
It's like a guy maskerade as a girl and getting a good look in the girls washroom. I don't think that that would be right. They should at least have their own washroom.

Perhaps their own batallion or division or brigade. Like Blacks in the early military, there should be phased de-segregation of the military.

Let gays serve...first as support personell, then as combat personell, then finally be incorporated into the military at large. Tuskagee and Buffallo Soldiers, in addition to the Fighting Mass. Regiments, served with distinction whilst they were segregated. IKE deseged after ww2, and the milirary did not fall apart. Phased desegregation worked in the past, so to me there is no reason to abandon this model.

Ridiculous....

There already are gays in the military. They're doing just fine and in many cases do a better job than many straight soldiers.

This whole argument is based on ignorance.
Do you realize that it wasn't until after WWII that black soldiers were integrated with the rest of the Army? It wouldn't even cross your mind today to think that African Americans don't make good soldiers.

Well this is the same.

No. Just because someone is gay doesn't mean they couldn't serve our country just as well as the next person. Obviously, if they can go through all the training and make it through, than they're good enough. Their sexuality shouldn't change anything. A person is a person no matter what. Doesn't matter if they're gay or not.

That would be cool.Start up a gay & lesbian military.Of course the butch lesbians would naturally be in charge. The gay males could take the role women play in our standard army, while the bulldykes would be like our marines. It would be fun. That could be an entire reality TV series!! Man I have such good ideas!!

That's a great idea!!!

An all gay military!! (You could join if you were straight, because they have a 'don't ask, don't tell' policy).

They would fight some FABULOUS wars!!

Of course they would all just end with both sides getting pissy, and it would degrade into a big slap fight and a bunch of screaming...

Of course not.
LGBT people can defend their country just as well as straight people. There are many, many LGBT people who have served well and served proudly.

Other than obviously bigotry and prejudice, why are you against LGBT people in your military?
Surely you don't think that LGBT people are so sex-crazy that you will be attacked? Trust, me, we do not find hatred and ignorance attractive.

Methinks the lad doth protest too much.
