It can be an abcess, which means theres an infection in the tooth. Yes, this can make your chin hurt if the infections is deep enough in the bone. You will probably need some antibiotics, and maybe a root canal. I don't want to scare you, but that's what it sounds like.

a doctor may prescribe you antibiotics if your lucky, i saw my doctor cos of a bad tooth that was causing me a stupid amount of pain, i had to beg for antibiotics! ask the doctor to prescribe you double antibiotics to ease the pain till you can see a dentist (doc cant fix you he will insist you see a dentist) the 2 antibiotics you need are amoxycillin and Metronidazole, thats a strong one that will kick any infections a** also while taking these, take 400mg of cocodamol or paramol, they are the strongest over the counter painkillers available, the ones with most codein in are best, ive been trying to get a tooth out for 3 months now and keep getting an infection in it which delays it even more!! its extremely painful so ive become a bit of a pro on antibiotics and painkillers!! good luck and i hope it clears up for you quickly!!!

It could be an abcessed tooth that has formed a sinus track that has not broken through the gum yet. That bump could possibly be just the infection from your tooth building up. It is common to see an abcess tooth form a boil on the gingiva.

You may have cyst which is like a bubble in the mouth and filled with liquid. Also your cyst may be so bad that you do have a viral infection. I recommend that you tell you dentist your symptoms and you need in right away.

The Dr will most likely refer you to the local hospital's oral surgery department for a soft tissue biopsy if he/she can't sort it. don't worry about it just yet though, we treat loads every week.
