Do I have to first pull the linolium up, or can I scratch it up to give the adhesive something to stick to?

For no more work than it will take to remove the linolium-- you are asking for a Major job later on in replacing the tile AND linolium only a short haul down the road !!
The tile are NOT going to adhere properly and the overall integrity of the floor will be compromised by this unstable base !!

Not directly, however, it will be necessary to install a backer regardless. So, leave the lino down and install some 1/2" durarock or tile backer over it then you can lay you tile. Make sure you install the backer correctly. Use liquid nails and fasteners every six inch's

NO. The linolium is to soft to make a solid bed to place tile on. The tiles, and or your grout will crack. (I assume you're talking about ceramic tile.)

It's not a good idea to put tiles on top of something flexible like linoleum, as the tiles will then move and crack. The floor under the tiles should be as hard and solid as possible.
