simply put.......the integrity of the sport is gone. it's not even appealing to younger guys who know how to box. the sport needs a savior so to speak. someone has to put the popularity back...something that would lead younger guys to aspire to be boxers. today we have no one with superstar caliber charisma. Floyd Mayweather is a great champion because he will take on ANY fighter. problem is that's not enough. the heavyweights are the ones who have always carried the sport. until we get the second coming of Ali or Tyson (good or bad....both of those guys were characters), boxing is doomed to just float on by.

There are good fighters and a couple great fighters all below Light-heavy. The problem is promoters, their alliance's and the sanctioning bodies. The good fighters do not have to, or want to fight another good fighter to be called Champion when an alphabet championships are dime a dozen. Light-heavy and above; big strong American athletes have a lot of other sports options where the sacrifice:dollar ratio is more lucrative. Don King is still the King of Boxing's Demise.

i used to think my dad was talking nostalgic drivel when he said that but recently I got a new cable TV contract and have been watching boxing matches from the 30s-late 80s and whilst the matches I see are but a selection of the best fights, those guys fought harder, more aggressively, as though there was more at stake than just cash and the quality of entertainment is therefore significantly higher. Henry Armstrong vs. Ceferino Garcia - World Welterweight Championship, 1938 - which I saw at about 2am the other morning is a fight that makes what we see on TV today look like a totally different sport. Both of those guys would kick seven shades of **** out of anyone they came across in today's ring.

I think boxing has gone downhill because of the lack of star power. All of the good fighters have either retired, or are too old now. Plus there are too many belts and weight classes. It is watered down with a lot of fighters who are not interesting. With the emergence of MMA, people find it more interesting to watch the UFC. I don't mind watching the UFC, but there is nothing like the sweet science of boxing.

i definitely agree that the heavyweight division is way down and also that the increased number of belts and weight classes affects things...but i think that there are enough great fighters out there that just don't want to fight the best, they are more content to take an easy win, pad their record, and make their money than actually go and try to beat the best

The heavyweights are indeed not as enticing as they were before. That's why we are now reffering to the lighter weight divisions for entertainment. Some people have asked why we had to make divisions outside of heavyweight, if boxing can be a free-for-all. Well, now they know.
