For the guy spouting on about an eye for an eye, why don't we rape rapists or pummel people guilty of assault?

I'm an evangelical, but I'm against the death penalty (I'm also against abortion). I feel it's God's job to condemn a person to death, not mine.

I'm not sure why so many evangelicals seem to be in favor of it, but it may be a reflection of our country's attitudes on this subject. As a nation, we seem to generally favor the death penalty. It's my understanding that Europeans think we're barbaric because of this, which is a terrible irony.

Because they go by mainly the Old Testiment in the Bible. Which does state basically the "eye for an eye" theory. In which is someone takes the life of another they to shall have their life taken away. There are also other crimes listed that are punishable by death...The diffrence though between a death row inmate and an unborn featus is the fact that the baby hasn't committed any crime at all...and is completely undeserving of this ultimate punishment!

And yes I am aware that inocent people do get executed on death row....But 9 out of 10 of them weren't inocent. And I'm not saying that I support death row!

I'm against both abortion and the death penalty, but I'm especially interested in your comment about an eye for an eye. That is the verse, and so far as I've experienced, the only verse that people trot out in favor of the death penalty.

But, as you point out, an eye for an eye is not about the crime of murder. It's about all offences and we do not fit the punishment to the crime.

I am against both but I can understand the difference. Abortion is killing something pure and innocent. The death penalty is justice decided in a court. I don't think any person should want the responsibility of ending a life.

May God Bless you.

You say "most Evangelicals"... where do you get your statistics?

I am evangelical, but do not support the death penalty - this is my personal belief and am not trying to influence anyone else. Life in Prison would be acceptable, but we as americans have spent far too much money on ensuring that inmates recieve top notch care and quality of life in prison. I also dont beleive that the burden should be on the taxpayer to support a convicted killer while they lives the rest of thier lives in prison.

If someone goes to prison, let their families support them, pay for their meals, health care, uniforms, sheets, etc. Stop making the rest of the law abiding society pay for their mistakes. Bottom line is that our criminal justice system is messed up. We cater too much to rehabilitation rather than punishment.

an unborn baby hasnt been given the time to deserve the death penalty. think of it as an adult abortion. They at least had some time to make something of themselves. The anti-life movement always wanted the abortion ages higher so they can get rid of the baby later & later in life stages. So this is a decent compromise.

1. think real simple.....and put yourself in someone elses shoes which is what you should do to see how they see.

So now imagine yourself as this tiny tiny creature in your mom.....do you not feel the right to live? would you not be mad to have someone come along and say, sorry....you can't live. You'd be furious as that tiny creature. You'd scream as loud as you could....I WANT TO LIVE, ITS MY RIGHT!!

So past all the goop n gunk, being politically correct or not....it boils down to......speaking up for someone that can't speak yet. If you couldn't speak or were mute, you'd really hope someone spoke up for you and your rights.

2. Death penalty is in the bible.....eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth. Those that kill by the sword, die by the sword.

Do evil and take a life....then have evil done onto you and your life take. Just as the bible says.

I am not for either!
Most are trying to incorporate the Old Testament / Contract into the New Testament / Contract.

What is opposite of Old? New!

So a line has been drawn in the sand called opposites!

They just have not recognized it yet!
or they are just looking for the religion of money!
And could care less about the Christianity part.

I would think it's because the commandment has been wrongly translated / taught as "Thou shalt not kill", when in fact, it is "Thou shalt not MURDER." The death penalty is not murder....it is punishment for those who have murdered. (Which, by the way, should ONLY be carried out if there is ABSOLUTE proof of the person's guilt.) Abortion is murder.

The baby did nothing wrong and doesn't deserve the death penalty. People who commit terrible crimes are given the death penalty for their sin.
