I just purchased a 1984 3 level townhouse. The family room has a woodburning fireplace on one wall . The face is all brick. I have no idea whats up the chimney. It does lead all the way to the rooof. I want to remove the brick and somehow seal up the chimney and just put up a regular wall. The end result should be just a room with walls without an opening for the firelace. Also the chimney is not interior at all. Is this possible and if so, How???

It's as easy as you think it is. Simply remove the face brick and frame the opening, insulate then seal with plastic to create a vapor barrier and drywall. Put a solid cap on top of the chimney and call it good. Oh. and make sure the chimney services ONLY the fireplace before capping.

Hey There!

I was just browsing around on Yahoo Answers and came across this question of yours.

I actually just purchased a home and am having the entire fire place taken out. It is not costing much at all to do this because it simply needs the boards and drywall and you are good to go. If you want to sell down the road just make sure it is on paper where the opening is that they could put a fireplace of their liking in it. IKEA has a lot of very contemporary fireplace ideas if that is what you are looking for and several other options as well.

I also wanted to mention that I’m an IKEA Regional Manager and was informed of a private website at my last regional managers meeting that ended up to be a promotion we’re doing.

This website is giving away several hundred $1,000 IKEA Giftcards for just putting in your zipcode. It’s a marketing campaign they are doing to see what areas of the country people are interested in IKEA!

You can’t go wrong… Just put in your zipcode and get a $1,000 IKEA Giftcard.

Heck, you could even get the FREE Giftcard and sell it on ebay and go buy stuff somewhere else with the money you just made!

If interested view the source url.

Yes it is possible, but I don't recommend it. You will lose A LOT of value, like 5K, by doing so. Fireplaces sell homes, trust me, I'm in the biz.

Why not close the flue, paint the bricks the same color as the wall, and put a candle display inside (or a plain painted wooden screen to make it blend in to the wall)? When you do decide to sell, you can repaint the fireplace and re-arrange your furnishings to incorporate the fireplace again.
