There is a question of legality and then of ethics. I would not use a semi auto to hunt animals for ethical reasons, unless it was a 10mm designed for hunting. Most semi-auto calibers are designed for protection, not hunting.

Having said that I am considering carrying a semi-auto for backup should my rifle fail and recently inquired about doing so here with a questions.

In Texas regulations and game limits can vary from county to county. The toll-free info. number (Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.) is: (800) 792-1112 or (512) 389-4800. Check w/Parks n Wildlife for the specific game you wish to hunt, but in a nutshell in Texas:

1. There is very little public hunting land so if you wish to hunt you must either be lucky enough to own your own place or afford to get in on a hunting lease;

2. For big game, only center fire cartridges are allowed (rifle or pistol);

3. Observe the legal seasons for the game you wish to hunt, the legal hunting hours and the game limits.

Don't forget your hunting license, add-on hunting stamps and that you can't shoot from a vehicle or the side of a public road.

Good luck.

Texas has no decrease on how many shells you've gotten in the shotgun. Use poultry shot. in case you employ greenback shot or deer slugs, there is not any rabbit left to reap. in case you employ a .22 lr as 'Jeffrey' shows, you will extra effectual be a darn sturdy shot.

The only place you should trust for Texas hunting regulations is the guys who enforce those laws...Texas Parks and Wildlife.

Go find this yourself please, but here is an excerpt:

"Game animals and game birds may be hunted with any legal firearm, EXCEPT:

white-tailed deer, mule deer, desert bighorn sheep, and pronghorn antelope may NOT be hunted with rimfire ammunition of any caliber.
shotguns are the only legal firearm that may be used to hunt Eastern turkey during the spring Eastern turkey season (see County Listing). Rifles and handguns may not be used to hunt Eastern turkey.
pellet guns and other air guns are NOT LEGAL.
fully automatic firearms are NOT LEGAL.
firearms equipped with silencers or sound-suppressing devices are NOT LEGAL.
a shotgun is the only legal firearm for hunting migratory game birds and lesser prairie chicken (see Definitions - Legal Shotgun).
Nongame Animals (Non-Protected): Any lawful firearm, pellet gun, or other air gun is legal."

I thought in Texas the only rules on hunting were it had to be breathing first. J/K. I have no idea what the laws are in Texas, but you may want to go to the Texas Dept. of Game and Inland Fishery. You should get your answers there.
