Knowing Spanish to work.?

Question

I do not feel I should have to learn spanish in order to get a job working in a company. So what there are spanish speaking customers. I don't have a problem with them, however I don't want to learn a new language just to accommodate illegals, or people who don't care to learn the main language of the country they came to.... Does anyone else feel like this?

This is increasingly becomming a serious problem in many job markets and personally I am seeing it be more a way to push Spanish down our throats than it is to get them to learn English. Around here ANY job that requires you to talk to the public at all is becomming "must speak Spanish". Whether it's flipping burgers, cashier, grave stone salesman, receptionist, factory work....whatever. Now these are not jobs Americans won't do or can't do....it's a means to keep Americans out of the jobs they can do. It's not whether you're "bi-lingual" because I speak 2 other languages.....they just aren't Spanish. We have nurses, aides, teachers and teachers aides that are trained and educated and are being refused employment because they don't speak Spanish. And we are having people who just speak Spanish getting these jobs without education or experience. No citizen in this country should be refused basic employment because they don't speak Spanish. If "bi-lingual" is so beneficial then it should be ANY other language. Not ousting English for just Spanish.
That is not fair or equal employment....it is punishing citizens for not speaking 1 particular language when English is the language of this country. You sure don't find hispanics asking for English speakers because they want our business. It is a way to isolate English out. I totally agree......they came here....learn English.

I understand what you are talking about.

I am self-employed, my family owns a ranch and all of my ranch workers can speak English, half of them being Mexican-American. However, I still had to learn some Spanish to talk to the illegal aliens that have crossed over the border onto my property over the years. It is important for me to know what's going on, without being completely dependent on my employees.

It is the corporations who are at fault. If there were no businesses catering to non-English speakers, then they would take learning English seriously. The only way to change this trend, is to make a sincere effort to a boycott, forcing businesses to comply with what American citizens want.

I agree. Especially since people that come here from countries that speak other languages (Poland, Germany, Italy, etc) are fully expected to learn English, and no accommodations are made for them. But the people that come from Spanish speaking countries refuse to learn, and the liberals will call us "bigots" for saying they should learn like everyone else.

I fell the same way. This is seen everywhere in the country right now.. schools, businesses, social services.. all want you to speak spanish and could care less if you could speak english. For a job to want you to speak spanish is rediculous when you are doing business in this country. I do feel in tourist areas I would be ok with people having to speak different laungages due to the high volume of foreign people in the area that might not speak english. But it really bothers me that all businesses today cater to the illegal population and expect us to learn another language to support a group of illegals who don't want to learn english!!

Interesting. I know what you mean - but I'm afraid Spanish will become a staple for any person looking for work in the US. Unless you're a scientist. We may be very ideological, but the reality is different. To begin with, English would have to declared as the official language of the country- and that has not happened. Don't forget that this nation is first and always about BUSINESS.

Even though I live in So. CA I don't know Spanish. I have not learned it, partially out of protest. When people are in the US they should understand, speak, read and write ENGLISH.

This is not a Spanish speaking country and I resent the fact that millions of ILLEGAL aliens are demanding that we learn Spanish for them.

While I do agree that people who wish to come here and make this country their home should speak English...or at least be on their way to trying to learn...a business has the right to hire those best qualified to make them the most money. So, you could just consider learning Spanish as learning a skill that will help your earning potential.

I do. Where I live right now, it is a requirement that anyone who works has to know conversational spanish or higher to work. I refuse to learn spanish to accomodate people who came to my country and refuse to learn the language.

I agree. In fact, it just irks the hell out of me that every sign I see now in places like Sears and Home Depot are in English and Spanish, with sometimes the Spanish name in bigger bolder letters with English underneath in small letters. THIS IS AMERICA. ENGLISH IS THE LANGUAGE OF THIS COUNTRY. If someone is visiting and has a hard time communicating, I understand. However, if you are coming here LEGALLY to live, you need to learn the language.
