White Zinfandel is made from the Zinfandel wine grape, which would otherwise produce a bold and spicy red wine. As such, it is not a grape variety but a method of processing Zinfandel grapes used in California.
In the 1970s Sutter Home Winery was a producer of premium Zinfandel in the Napa Valley. One technique they utilized to increase concentration in their wines was to bleed off some of the grape juice prior to fermentation to increase the impact of compounds in the skins on the remaining wine. The excess juice was separately fermented into a dry, almost white wine that Sutter Home called "White Zinfandel."

Samantha came closest to the correct answer with this one. The term 'White Zinfandel' does not actually refer to a white wine. As many people above have observed, this is a rosé wine made using a short maceration (skin-contact) of red grapes in order to give the pink colour. Zinfandel is a red grape.
White Grenache is a grape variety in its own right. Closely related to the Grenache grape, which is red, the 'Grenache Blanc' is native to the south of France and is most famously used in the wines of the Rhône Valley. Many appellations, including Châteauneuf-du-Pape, allow the use of both Grenache and Grenache Blanc in their AOC wines.

all grape juice for wine is white or clear actually. Red Wine & White wine. The way that wines get their color is by how much contact in the fermenation process that have with the skin. All color for wine comes from the skins. White Wine grapes have very light skins and do not color the wine that much. White Zinfandel is made from Red Zinfandel grapes and is left on the skin for a period of time to turn wine pink. White Grenache is made the same way using red Grenache grapes.
They are actually considered Rose wines by definition. And are usually in different category than red or white.
Hope this helps!

Each of these comes from a red grape with white juice. Typically, to make a red wine, the colour and much of the complexities come from the white juice soaking in the skin (after the grape has been 'popped'). So, to make a pink wine, the white juice is harvested with minimal contact of the skin.

Red wines are made with black grapes and white wines with white grapes as a general rule. Most of the color comes from the skins. "White zin" is made by removing the (dark) skin shortly after pressing, but a certain amount of the color is already there, so it's "blush" or "rose," even if you don't want to admit it.
