Does becoming a police officer give you an insatiable desire to eat donuts and drink coffee?

There are sometimes few places open in the wee hours of the morning or late into the evening. Typically, donut shops open early (because they make the donuts) and some have historically remained open late. They are warm, have tables, access to coffee and food, and usually appreciate the presence fo the cops. When I was a young boot in Sacramento County, the only place open in my sector at 4 AM was a donut shop. Fresh donuts, fresh coffee, and a place to write reports.

They hang out there cause they love the "hole" thing about donuts. Besides, if they didn't we couldn't have these great bumper stickers that say "Bad cop Bad cop, no donut".

Drinking coffee to stay awake is the norm for many police officers and the #1 place to get good fresh coffee is at a donut shop. While drinking your coffee in the donut shop you might want a donut or two. The fact that cops go to donut shops doen't mean they are there just for the donuts but more for the coffee. The donuts are just a treat with their coffee.

In some areas, the donut shop was the only thing open late at night. But becoming a cop has nothing to do with liking donuts/coffee.
It's because of thought processes like yours that I would starve rather than be seen in uniform anywhere near a donut shop. Why not do your own experiment: stake out a donut shop and see how many cops actually go there. You'll be surprised.

They don't really hang out at donut shops, but since officers can work all night, it is hard to find anything that opens. Fast food places close at midnight here, and the donut shops usually open around 4, so then the officers have someplace to get something to eat or to drink

my dad owned a donut shop for like 25 yrs and before that it was my grandpa's. We had cops coming by all the time b/c they got free donuts, anything they wanted at anytime (we were open 24 hr a day)... needless to say with all them coming by no one would steal from us... and if they did then the cops were there in a min.

Because donuts and coffee taste great, don't cost too much, and aren't much trouble to gulp down or throw away in a hurry.

Of course, this assumes that you're right, that that's where they all hang out. But, I'd rather have them hanging out there than at the local bar.

No, but they sure love to eat donuts. It might be some unwritten law that says you have to eat the stuff to remain in good standing with the police department, or maybe it is upholding the image of the stereotype of what a policeman should be doing.

Donut shops have the best coffee and we need a caffeine fix to keep it moving.

Same reason they hang out at the 7-11.
Free coffee.
If the cops know they can get free coffee, they'll hang out there--if the crooks know the cops hang out there, they won't rob the place.
Everyone wins, for 79 cents.
