I have cut the hair around it to keep it from matting and so I can see what I am doing. I have cleansed it with a water/hydrogen peroxide solution and also tried straight hydrogen peroxide. He is good about letting me clean it, so it doesn't seem to hurt him. I have the flu and will take his to the vet when I get better, but is the cleaning with hydrogen peroxide ok?

Cant you just call the vet and ask them? They would be able to advise correctly. Good luck with your cute little pup and drink lots of fluids!

No keep hydrogen peroxide away from the eye, just use a warm wet cloth to they eye no soap until you get to the vet, but do get to the vet very soon.

This is only to be used until you can get him to the vet. I soon as you feel up to it, take him. Eye infections are not something you mess around with.

Cutting the hair away is a good start. I would clean his eye with regular warm tap water, or if you wear contacts, use saline (much better). Take neoporin (sp?) or other triple antiboitic ointment and put it in his eye. Do this 2x a day until you can get him to the vet.

Now those of you who WILL disagree, I got this from a VET for my daughters guinea pig until I could get her to the vet.

Good Luck with your pup, and hope you feel better soon.

I don't think I would clean the eye with peroxide.. If nothing else, I would use normal human eye drops in a pinch, to rinse out the eye.

You should never put peroxide in an eye. It has a bleaching agent and could blind him. He needs a vet! Please get a friend or neighbour to take him.
