We have to scrutinize the media coverage. Some of it has been manipulated to gain support for this war. Did anyone watch W5 last night? I have heard even more in depth stuff like the story of the girl that was supposed to have witnessed babies being left on the floor out of their incubators by Iraqi soldiers. It was fabricated, never happened. She was the daughter of a diplomat. The whole thing was orchistrated by American spin doctors. Layers, hidden layers. People get used!

However having said that, I have heard some interviews of ground workers that make that plausable. I also look to things I see happening in Canada as supporting that possibility.

Often we get waves of immegrants historically speaking. Everyone has this generational adjustment to living here to go through.

As Canada has been changing and becomming, up until recently anyway, a more human rights oriented country, our laws and social conscience have sometimes, regarding women in particular, appeared to be in conflict with some imported beliefs. They certainly are in conflict with some peoples beliefs that have been here for several generations! So not a stretch is it?

Groups and individuals may or may not feel pressure on them to address these concerns. They may feel judged(..are by some people but not by everyone...we live together people! we have to get to know each other!)So some women in these communities in particular stand up and defend their traditions and so on. Reasonable response!

However, then down the road you see things in the news that those communities are working through issues of womens rights and abbuse and women from those comunities are right in there working it through. That makes a lot of sense.
When you are part of something it is intemate. You know it best.

Support rather than dictate, and people will do what they need to do for themselves of their own will. Making laws that protect women are essential though. Some things should not be left as grey areas.

As much as the womens movement has been attacked and as much as femenists have been steriotyped and put down I believe it gets swept under the carpet that the rights and freedoms that many women in the world enjoy today however they may fall short, are there because of women like us. They are also there because of respectful secure minded men that 'really' love women. Big hug to you guys you are the best!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If it is true, I am glad women in Iraq want to celebrate International Womens Day. We each belong to aa numberr of different communities, I do anyway. Women globally connected to celebrate each other at least one day a year is a beautiful thing. I am amazed at what women do every minute in every day on this planet. We need this.

If they were arrested it is very sad. I would want to know the cercumstances and if all such celebrations, marches whatever these women were planning, I would want to know if it was specific to women or such things in general 'right now'.

It may be that there were concerns of it getting a reaction that may be the problem If they couldn't get permission officially and went ahead with their plans yah! we can get arrested for that here too!

This has been a pattern historically. Hierarchy and or traditon how ever you want to enterpret it, isn't an easy thing to break through as many people know all to well. I wish I had written down his name sorry, but there was an author interviewed on Canadain television a few months ago. He was from the middle east. He articulated so beautifully things about the situation over there. I would have liked to hear him speak longer. He talked about the core teachings of Islam and how as with other religions they have been twisted and mingled with cultural or others sources of beliefs that in this case have led to a distorted view of women in Islam by groups like the Taleban. Sorry about spelling. Of course he pointed in the other direction back to respect and appreciation of women within his religion. I was very glad that I got to hear him speak. The general public outside of the Muslim community in particular needs to hear this kind of information.

Peace and appreciation.

Since International Womens Day has now come and gone! I saw some very peaceful stuff on the news from Iraq! Women out in public doing their thing. Very nice. Was that all?

they're are fighting a male dominated culture that is hostile towards equal rights with women. they will probably be abused in jail and then stoned to death but these zealots that can't handle liberated women.
