Edit: So very many of you missed the humor, alas, SHE WAS KIDDING. She was making a poignant statement with sarcasm.

I think that "Darwinist" is even funnier than "evolutionist", don't you?

Especially when the creationist breathlessly tells us that Darwin believed in god, as though that should influence us. Or better yet, when the creationist repeats that tall tale about Darwin recanting on his deathbed.

I get the impression that many creationists think that everyone worships someone, and therefore that those of us who believe in evolution must worship Darwin. I of course believe in evolution, but I couldn't care less what Darwin said, what he believed, whether or not he changed his mind, or anything of the sort.

None of that is even remotely relevant to the fact that evolution occurs, and is the origin of the variety of current species.

To be fair, I think it's also silly to suggest that creationists should read "The Origin of Species". It was a seminal book, but our understanding of evolution has developed immensely since that basic starting point. "The Origin of Species" is almost certainly full of claims that we thought at the time were true but have since been refuted. That's how science works - we change our minds in response to new evidence. Religion doesn't - that's why science is better than religion at revealing truth.

These are sciences. You can find more about these in any science book, which should be available in most schools. Science and religion are compatible, and very important to each other.

The fourth principle of Bahá'u'lláh is:

"The Unity of Religion and Science

We may think of science as one wing and religion as the other; a bird needs two wings for flight, one alone would be useless. Any religion that contradicts science or that is opposed to it, is only ignorance -- for ignorance is the opposite of knowledge.

Religion which consists only of rites and ceremonies of prejudice is not the truth. Let us earnestly endeavour to be the means of uniting religion and science.

Ali, the son-in-law of Muhammad, said: 'That which is in conformity with science is also in conformity with religion'. Whatever the intelligence of man cannot understand, religion ought not to accept. Religion and science walk hand in hand, and any religion contrary to science is not the truth."

(Abdu'l-Baha, Paris Talks, p. 130)

The word "evolutionist" does not imply it is a religious belief any more than the word "guitarist" does. This idea that "-ist" added to a word - which means, "one who subscribes to the theory of evolution by natural selection as the most viable explanation for the development of species on Earth" - makes it a belief and degrades its value is a peculiarly American idea that Europeans can't understand. It arises from claims made by anti-evolutionists as a means of discrediting evolution. By accepting the idea that "-ist" devalues the idea of evolution, you are already accepting a false suggestion proposed by creationists. Why would you do that?

[steps off soapbox. this really does bug me though.]

I consider myself a spirtual "darwin neo-druid" as of last night, and started a yahoo group. I don't consider it a religion but a spirtual path.

Obviously this isn't what you are talking about.

We meet on an ad hoc basis.
My pope is Richard Dawkins- but he's with the Evolutionary church of England. The local Bishop's name is Sam Harris.

Both- much more eloquent than the Catholic pople.

Here's Professor Dawkins speaking:

"Darwinism" and "Evolutionism" is nothing but the two parts or chapters of Heredity and evolution.

Darwinism is nothing but the theory evolved by Charles Darwin on the basis of Heredity .

You'd find their services in the secular schools of America. They meet several times per week.

They are not religions. They are scientific concepts.
Darwinism refers to Charles Darwin's theory of evolution that we evolved from apes.
Evolutionism is just a more broad term for that.

Try Google-ing those two words, you'll learn a lot.
