So far I have heard 2 religious answers, but only 1 spiritual answer, and after all 12 step programs are NOT religious but spiritual. One important thing you forgot was "...to turn our will and our life over to the care of god, AS WE UNDERSTOOD HIM."

That is the important part. These people quoting from the bible are not wrong. They are just out of context with this question. First you must develope an understanding of a high power.

After doing this, it's up to you. I personally hit my knees (kneel down and pray) every morning and night with the short version of the 3rd step prayer. "God, take my will and my life, guide me in my recovery and show me how to live." I also pray in addition to morn and night on an as needed basis. Most importantly I BELIEVE in what I am praying (this comes from the 2nd step, that's why they are in order).

This is how I do it, but it can be different for everyone!!!

Very important question! God is anxious to hear from you - He made you, died for you and wants to save you. In 1 John 1:9 He says if we'll confess our sins, He will forgive us! So if you really want to turn your life over to Him, get down on your knees and confess every sin you can think of one-by-one, tell Him you're sorry that your sins nailed Him to the cross, and that you want Him to be the Lord of your life. This is something you need to do every day - maybe several times a day. We are made perfect through His power. He's promised to be with us always - Matthew 28:20. Get a Bible and start reading with the fourth book of the New Testament - St. John- His Word is powerful! He's alive and more than willing to help us! He loves you!

I don't think there's any special way. Just what you feel comfortable with. Turning your will and life over to God just means to start trusting that He really cares about you and wants to be part of your life. Just start each day, maybe 5 minutes, find a quiet place and just "talk" to God. Tell Him about what you fear, hope, dream and worry about. Then, be quiet and try to listen to Him. God is not silent, we just need to listen and be open to Him. The best way to "hear" what God is saying is to start reading the bible. You don't have to have a degree in Theology to understand the Bible. Just open it up and read a little.

I believe that we all have a need for God in our hearts and we will never truly be complete and happy until we come to Him and get to know Him. The only way to get to know someone is to spend time with them. Spend a little time with God and in time you will know Him and you will find out how much He loves you!

God Bless you!

You have to prove to God that your whole purpose in being alive is to serve him, follow his commandments, and publicly show that you're willing to drop your old personality put on the new one by getting baptized and washing away all your sins and dedicating your life to God.
