I was put in it in Kindergarten and stayed in it through graduation. The official IQ test was done in the fourth and again in the eighth grades. A spatial test in the 9th and a creativity test in the seventh. I also had a creative writing one in the second grade.

A friend of mine said the school contacted her about her second grader and asked to have her tested. I know there are alot of third graders in our gifted progam at school. My daughter is in the first grade and her teacher asked if I mind she go with the gifted children since she is doing so well in reading. She LOVES to read! I am allowing her to go with this teacher but I don't think she's been tested or anything. My daughter did say that the teacher gave her a second grade test and she passed it. Now she is working on math problems that her brother who is in second grade hasn't even started! How old is your child? They seem to test kids younger these days... you may want to call the school and talk to them about it. I do understand what you mean about not thinking your child is some prodigy or anything. It's hard at times when they are pulled out from the other children. My daughter said that some second graders were laughing at her for having to be pulled out of class to work because they associated that with the special needs kids. Kids can be so cruel nowadays.

Every state and school system has different rules. Here in West Virginia they can be tested as early as kindergarten, but most don't get tested until first grade. Students can be referred for testing by a teacher, parents or can refer themselves. I would call your child's school and speak to the counselor. They are usually the gateway to testing of any sort.

Many school districts rely on standardized test scores as an indicator. Check with your school district to find out when they start testing students, what the criteria is, etc. Unfortunately, as funding is cut, programs like gifted and talented are often among the first to go, as they are viewed as "extras" and expendable. District websites are often good sources of information regarding programs as well.

It depends on the school. I went to a private school till 3rd grade, then when I went to public school that year they tested me immediately. Although I have to admit the so-called "gifted and talented" program ended up boring me to tears. I think my son was tested in kindergarten though - in public school.

I suggest instead of waiting to go get him tested at an institute for advanced learning, here we have Sylvan and whatnot. Talk to the school as well to see if you get your child support if he can advance faster by any chance.
So don't just wait for it to happen, make it happen. Some things are free or you can do yourself to enrich him.
Schools are more about a structured specific number of steps in order, so it's not structured to learn at your own rate, even those gifted programs.
Oh and examples of what you can do is taking your child to the zoo to learn about animals, or to the library to read books about space. If you expose your child to these options he can have limitless potential.

At my school, recommendations for the AIG program are made at the end of 3rd grade. They are placed in 4th. Ask your son's teacher or call/email the school counselor.

how ironic that you asked that. my son is 9 and in 3rd grade(late b-day) yestersday he came home with a note that said he was recommended by his teacher to test for the gifted program in our district. so i guess third grade is about the time they look into this.

My son is in the GATE class. He was tested in second grade at the end of the year. He was put in the class in third grade. At our school they aren't put in the class until 3rd grade.
