Hi, My name is Jessica...

Well I guess I'll start off by giving you a brief synopsis of
the position I'm in at the moment.

About 3 months ago, I moved into an apartment complex,
About a week after I moved in, A Spanish speaking family
of 7 people moved into the apartment below me...
I soon became very fond of the family that lives down there,
They have been teaching me Spanish, While I've been teaching them English! It was all good and all great...
But then I started having feelings for one of the men
that live down there, and I soon came to find, He was
having the same feelings for me as well. Now we are together
in a great relationship, and I care for him so dearly....
I started hanging out at their apartment every day for at least
3 - 4 hours a day, And I really enjoy spending time down there,
but now my mom said that I spend to much time down there
and that I'm only allowed to spend time down there on the weekends. ( I'm 16 ) I have recently come to find......

I have recently come to find,
That my mom isn't so fond of mexicans.!.
She doesn't like them is what she says.
And this is a big problem for me,
Because my best friends are mexican
and my boyfriend is as well!
I'm so confused on what to do,
Because my mom has no idea about
me dating this man,
And if she did, she'd get extremely upset
about it, and forbid me from seeing them ever again, which isn't at all what I want to happen.

My mom told me,
that mexicans will steal, lie and cheat anyone they can...

She also told me I can't go any where
durring the week, But that on weekends for
a couple hours is alright.

What do you think of this situation?
How would you react to it if you were
a 16 year old female,
Who is homeschooled,
Dating a Mexican which whom your mother would despise??
And How would you react to being told that you can only go out for a few hours on the weekends?

Is it really that big of a deal,
Or am I blowing it over board?

I wish I old tell you that I have no idea what you are going through, but I do. I am a white female (29 years old) and I am about to marry a black man. My family is not thrilled. They are old school, believing in people sticking together. What I found VERY helpful was telling them all the great things about him before they met him. I knew that they would react poorly because of his race. I explained how he treated me, how hard working he was etc etc. They already had in their minds what a good guy he was before they met him. My dad was a bit cranky but my mom has come around. You have to remember, you need to live for you. At 16 I don't recommend anything drastic, but try and get your mom to see your side. Use it the other way around, how would she feel if your bf's family was against you? You are not over reacting. It hurts like crazy when someone speaks badly of the person you are with. Sometime's that hurts more than someone saying the bad thing about you. Talk to her, let her in and make sure she knows the great things. She needs to know how you feel so that she will not say hurtful things about Mexicans anymore, at least you can ask her not to do these things in front of you. Good luck, it's not easy, but it's worth it.

Actually, your mom is right about one or two things. First of all, you are too young to be spending that much time with anyone regardless of their nationality. You should be doing the things that will keep her off your back, i.e., cleaning the house, homework, studying, etc. You say you're having feelings for one of the "men." How old is this guy? If you were my child, I'd pitch a fit too. 16 isn't an adult and while you're under her roof, you need to concentrate on the stuff that 16 olds should like driving, passing your SATs, etc. Aren't there any guys at your school you could associate with that are your age? I don't agree about what she says about Mexicans. However, the way to prove her wrong is to act like an adult with this situation. You can still be friends but just cut back on the amount of time you spend with this family. You should be spending more time with your family & girlfriends rather than "men" regardless of whether they are Mexican or not.

My dad is the same way, but our parents are a different generation then us and back in their day white people dated white people and that was that. You can't change the way your mom feels about mexicans, you can try to explain that you have mexican friends and it upsets her that she dismisses them because of their race... but she probably won't listen.. about the guy downstairs just listen to your moms rules and go down there whenever she will let you

okay I am Mexican myself and not all Mexicans are like this tell your mom to give him a try all mexicans do not lie cheat or steal, most of them are very loyal to their companions. I don't really know why your mother has a problem with it I mean what did Mexicans evr do to her, try asking her why she thinks that why and try talking her out of it, it might work out in the end.

Your mom needs to get with the times. Soon majority of the races will be intermixed and there is nothing she can do about it. Also you can't stop your heart on who it likes. I say just keep talking to her about it and tell her how you feel.

I think your mom is a bit of a biget. However, parents usually know best and there must be a reason she feels like this!

Your mom is your mom forever...this guy is only your boyfriend until you decide to move on. Maybe setup a meeting between them at Taco Bell or something....
