They use to be named only after women. I suffered though 2 of them when I lived on the East coast, Hazel in 58 and Donna in 60. Today they alternate each storm between using a woman's name and a man's name.

They aren't - you can go to the National Hurricane Center website and see the list of names for each year - it is alphabetical and it switches off between male and female names as you progress down the alphabet.

Funny, but it is a little sexists. It is true that the worst hurricanes are names after women. Go figure.

Generally, the name Hurr-icanes prompted female names, but with the ACLU and all- it is a hodge podge of names.. Storm names are frequently retired depening upon the $ of damage and the amt of ppl killed during them.. As a survivor of Katrina.. It was definitely no laughing matter...

well usually what they do is pick out a name alphabetically..
and they do opposite gender names..
example ANDREW one of the worst hurricanes to hit Florida, HUGO one of the worst hurricanes to hit South Carolina.. were boy names..
A may be a boys name then the second B would be a girls name and so on and so forth

Funny because they are no longer named after women. Some are named after men who come and leave.

They alternate between men and woman and go through the alphabet. So if the first was AMY then the second would be BEN. Get it?

They go by the alphabet each year, somtimes you get a lot of girls names, sometimes boys names, Most often its a mix of both
Now they alternate genders.
