Prayer is all of those things, It is communication with God to help you become stronger in character- through prayer you can ask God for anything- you can thank God for what you do have, and you can ask God for help in your life if you are really suffering. You can ask God for help in this life, and to help guide you to righteousness for success in the Hereafter.

First of all prayer is not for the satisfaction of material desire. You hang out with the wrong people. Prayer should always be for spiritual elevation - no matter what your version of God or spirituality is.

Prayer can not be for satisfaction of material desires. One can never get satisfaction from what he gets in this world. When you get some thing you desire for more. And even if you meet your desires, it gives you a deminishing effect of satisfaction and after a period of time same thing starts giving you uneasiness.

So whereas you can attempt to get material possessions, you should always remember its futility.

You should pray God only for opening a path for you to get a saint. He will do everything thereafter.

Prayer, by nature, is a spiritual practice. It is reaching to the God of our own understanding in our covenant of love. When we ask for material gain, we are limiting our spiritual progress.

Prayer is the elevation of the mind and heart to God:
+ In praise of his glory
+ In petition for some desired good
+ In thanksgiving for a good received
+ In intercession for others before God

Through prayer the Christian experiences a communion with God through Christ in the Church.

"For me, prayer is a surge of the heart; it is a simple look turned toward heaven, it is a cry of recognition and of love, embracing both trial and joy." (St. Thérèse of Lisieux)

"Prayer is the raising of one's mind and heart to God or the requesting of good things from God." (St. John Damascene)

But when we pray, do we speak from the height of our pride and will, or "out of the depths" of a humble and contrite heart? (Psalm 130:1)

He who humbles himself will be exalted; humility is the foundation of prayer. Only when we humbly acknowledge that "we do not know how to pray as we ought," are we ready to receive freely the gift of prayer. "Man is a beggar before God."

With love in Christ.

Both of the things you stated are prayers.
1. Material prayers - Asking for material things, " God give us our bread, forgive our sins etc. . . to fulfill one's material desire. One is taking service from God. It is better than Atheists. One has affection towards the Lord and therefore is asking something from the Lord out of affection but nonetheless it is inferior to spiritual prayer.

2. Spiritual prayers - Glorifying God whether he materially provides or not. It is unconditional prayer not dependent on material things of "GIVE bread, GIVE forGIVENESS of sins, etc. Spiritually one wants to serve the Lord satisfy the desire of the Lord. One doesn't take service from the Lord, rather wants to serve the Lord. Hare Krishna is one such prayer

HARE KRISHNA HARE KRISHNA
KRISHNA KRISHNA HARE HARE
HARE RAMA HARE RAMA
RAMA RAMA HARE HARE

The meaning of the above prayer is as follows,
"O Supreme Energy of Krishna and O Lord Krishna, please engage me in Your eternal service." or in other words,
"O energy of the Lord [Hare], O all-attractive Lord (Krishna), O Supreme Enjoyer (Rama), please engage me in Your service."

truthfully, people can call it whatever they want.

mumbling into your hands and pretending that a god hears you, and is taking notes, is pretty ridiculous.

additionally, acting like you know god, you talk to god, and that you know what god wants of people is practically a mental illness. people need to grow up.
