For most dogs, it is one of those things they just do, like peeing on trees to mark their territory. In the wild, the mother dog will usually eat their puppies poo to cover up their tracks, I have no idea why. It's very disgusting but does absolutely no harm to the dog. It's actually nutritious for them!

I have a shih tzu that eats her poo sometimes and it is sooo disgusting. I have been told that it is a lack of vitamin D. My dog has eaten Iams dog food the last 3 years and that hasn't helped anything so I would definately try vitamins. Good luck!

It is called coprophilia(im not sure if I spelled that right), they are usually either curious, dont know better, or may be searching for a nutrient they are not getting. Put them on a good puppy vitamin, or switch to better quality food, and ask your vet about coprophilia medicine, which makes their poo taste funny

Its actually called coprophagia. Some animals like rabbits do it because there is nutrients in it that they need but dogs don't really need the extra nutrients. They just might like the taste/
