I had a really bad time at the dentist when I was a kid, and it put me off going for 20 years. Then I began having real trouble and a lot of pain, I had to be dragged there by my husband, and ended up having 2 teeth out. Since then I'm okay with the dentist and don't always have to have anything done, I go every 6 months now, or if pain ever occurs. Trouble is I know I've got 2 wisdom teeth at the back, and if ever I start with pain they're going to have to come out. Then I'll S**T myself.

Most people do not like going to a dentist, it is nearly a tradition, some one in your mouth with noisy tools and in a sensitive area, it has always been a scary thing, I used to be afraid, I used to fall flat on my face at the thought of a needle, until I took the courage to tell my dentist my fear, he then explained a thing or two and took a bit more care when I was there and all is OK now , I suggest you talk to your dentist as well, if he is half decent he will be able to put your fears at rest.

I had a horrific experience at the dentist years ago and was terrified for a long time. When I knew I couldn't avoid it any longer, I spoke to my GP. Genuine phobias can be treated! When I managed to go to the dentist - it took 4 attempts - the dendist was brilliant! My GP had explained my situation to him and he was so patient. I've gone to see him 3 times since and although I still get mildly anxious, it's not really a problem anymore. Dentists are used to worried patients - it's a common fear. Just talk to someone. Good luck. I feel for you! x

First I would ask you, why are you afraid, if it is a lack of knowledge, then maybe getting a complete explaination of what the dentist is going to do at each appointment, would help you better to work through your fear. If that doesn't help, ask your dentist for Nitrous Oxide sedation, esentially laughing gas. It will make you more comfortable during each procedure, and it wears off as soon as you take the mask off and get oxygen in your system. I work in a dental office and I have a lot of clients who are much more comfortable with being in the dental chair when they have nitrous sedation.

I was scared sh!tless the first time I ever went to the dentist & still am to this day. Nothing bad has happened for me to be afraid either!!! I get physically sick & everything if I know I am to be going to the dentist. 3 out of my 4 wisdom teeth have already come through (w/ barely any pain & no problems) & I have yet to get them removed...and I'm almost 24 years old!
Try searching for anyone who does Sedation Dentistry in your town. That's what was suggested to me since I have such a horrible time coping.

Yes, when I was about that age I used to throw real tantrums at the dentist - apparently it once took four staff to restrain me!
Then one day I just chilled out! I made a conscious effort to calm down and be co-operative, and I found the whole experience was less traumatic and over quicker, so I didn't make any fuss from then on!

i hate the dentist. i didn't go for about 9 years because i had a filling, which wasn't a problem, but the needle didn't numb my mouth. i felt the drilling like it was drilling right through the nerve. i tried to tell him, but he thought i was just a frightened teenager with hysteria so i didn't go back.
i had to go back about 2 years ago and seen a different dentist but within the same practice for root canal, and again the needle didn't numb my mouth. i felt the drilling hit the nerve again. if there is a way of watering the anaesthetic down, i swear this is what they are doing.

I am terrified of the dentist I have the same reaction you do and I've just found out that I have to have my wisdom teeth removed. But I try to keep calm and I promise myself a treat if I get through a visit without crying. Think several pints of stella and your sorted!!
