Hey nimisisprime,

You do not need his SSN to find him. I hope that SSNs are protected enough that you cannot get it. If you can get his, you could get mine.

So, I would like to take you down a different method of finding people. You can use the following search engines to help find him:

Just a guess but were you and the other parent either divorced or in a paternity action? If yes then you can go back to the court documents and the info to find your son and the other parent will be in one of the documents the court made you sign before leaving the courthouse. It's gonna have both parents' ssn, drivers license #, nearest relative not living with them, plus all the identifying info on your son.

The other way to get it if you ever declared him as your dependent is to request a transcript of your old tax returns from the IRS.

On the other hand, if your son doesn't know you then I'd feel really funny about you asking for his ssn. There's a lot of really goofy stuff that happens with identity theft these days and it would be out of line for a genealogist to help someone find a living person if there's a chance that something funky might happen. I'd rather see you use Classmates.com, Intelius.com, public record searches, Zabasearch.com or whitepages.com to find him.

A SSN is a personal ID number for each citizen of the United States and it usually isn't available to the public for reasons of identity theft.
If you want to get in touch with your son, the best place to start is with the child's mother or other realatives who might know of his wear abouts. Other avenues to try would be to look up his name (or the name of his guardian) in a phone book of his last residence. (Try Yahoo People search.) If you don't know that information or cannot find his name, then I would suggest calling and speaking to neighbors in the area that you last knew him to be. Any long term residents may remeber him or know where he may have moved to and you can try to search again there.
Unforunatly, you cannot get anyone else's SSN legally.

If this is for personal use and he is a minor you can get it via Social Security Administration.
If he is an adult he has to get it himself.
A private individual should have NOT have access to a SS# unless you are their legal guardian.
Only legal entities can obtain SS# or that person provides it to a company etc...
Hope this helps...
