Clinical depression is caused by chemicals in the brain, the brain activity of a depressed person is VISIBLY (on a scan) reduced compared to a "normal" person. Thus people with actual clinical depression have an illness which is caused (and observable) in the head.
It is a mental illness but it is caused by physical (ie real and measurable) depletion / poor use of brain chemicals

Depression is a disease of the brain caused by a chemical imbalance. Medications can help. Ofcourse emotions of the heart can increase depression. The end of my marriage started off my depression.

Depression is a real physical chemical imbalance in the brain that has absolutely nothing to do with the heart. The heart is for pumping blood round the body.

Depression is related to physical changes in the brain, and connected to an imbalance of a type of chemical that carries signals in your brain and nerves - neurotransmitters. Anti depressants increase these neurotransmitters.
Depression though, can be caused by issues of the 'heart' but these will then cuase physical changes on the brain. So in a way, yes and no.

Clinically, I believe it is a chemical imbalance of the brain. However, it can lead to people changing their habits and actions, which can - and does - effect the heart. (Not eating right, sleeping too much or not enough, no exercise, drugs, alcohol, etc.) There are many cases of people with problems in both areas.

The heart is a mechanical device that pumps blood. It receives it's instructions and control from the brain.
Whilst there are numerous causes of depression they are all brain based.
