I have a book called Victory Cookbook by Marguerite Patten it has loads of war time foods in which are all the traditional kinds of food e.g. stews, dumplings, toad in the hole, meat pudding, hot pot, these all use basic ingredients as that was all they had back then.

My parents swear by Marguerite Patten, but I'm not sure if her books are still in print.

Chefs such as James Martin and Brian Turner seem to be going back to British basics a lot - I just made James Martin's Apple Pie recipe and it's deeeeeelish!

If you're in the UK, look in your charity shops, they're stuffed with them (at least mine is)! Can't sell the things!
