A lot of people are just giving wrong information. You can have tattoos that are visible in uniform. I have been active duty AF for 10 1/2 years and have 7 tattoos. One is a half sleeve that extends past my elbow and another is a full band around my left wrist. As long as they are not in poor taste or in the AF as long as they do not extend over 25% of the exposed body part they are fine. Several people I know have many more than I do. A lot of people get them on their forearms and a very visible in uniform
I have my EOD badge, a traditional Japanese dragon and scene, a Celtic wristband, a sunburst leg band, an angel, and an eagle in front of a sunburst with the letters USAF underneath.

Im pretty surprised by other people's answers. Tattoos are absolutely allowed in the Military--I'm fairly certain in every single branch. The rule is that the tattoos can't be racist or sexist, I think the wording they use is "consistent with the Army values" or something along those lines. In the Airforce, the rule is that the tattoo cannot cover over 25% of an extremity--but that shouldn't worry you in this situation.
As far as ideas, how about a tattoo of whatever unit your son is pretending to be assigned to, I.E. First Infantry, or 2nd Rangers, or 101st Airborne. Those tattoos are pretty common.

In the US forces it has to be acceptable and not in an area that shows while in uniform, so why bother? While I APPLAUD the fact that you are dressing him up as a soldier, don't forget the current politial differences in the current situation involving them. In other words, there are a whole lot of faculty in schools that are not so "Right" if you know what I mean? Why don't you consider dressing him up as a Medic. Everyone loves Medics, big red cross on his helmet or hat and a shoulder bag with a red cross on it. Just my opinion.

Yes you can, but it's a catch 22. You can get tattoos, but if you get hurt and can't perform your job they can punish you, it's rare, but it does happen.
As for an idea, it depends on what brach of the military he's going to represent. As a former navy guy, I would go with the navy. I have a tattoo of Snoopy wearing a sailor suit drinking a soda- it represents the military and is kid friendly so go with that.

well in the USNAVY you are able to have them in places that are not evident. They do not like them in places like your arms or neck for example.
here is a site with lots of examples of military tats...a traditional military tat is pretty much the symbol of each branch/service that you go into.
I am a USNAVY wife and my hubby has tattoos; one, a full size on on his chest and 2 one on each leg which are evident and he recently went into the military and was told the "rules"...he had existing tats going in and then we recently added one after he joined.

Yes you can. But in the new policy, they have to be kept covered if they aren't within what the guidelines of acceptable are. Most people get something personal. I think it would be cute for him to have a heart with mother on a banner running across it!

I was a soldier, and come form a family of soldiers, sailors and airmen. None of us has or had a tattoo. I think that they had to remain under the uniform, where they couldn't be seen.
