I'm a new Mom, so please no lectures on me worrying too much...ha....but I KNOW we shouldn't compare, but my 1 year old doesn't shake her head no. My friend whose baby is 10 months just started doing this. I know it's considered a developmental thing by looking at "THE LIST", but she just doesn't do this. She seems to understand things and I don't sense any developmental delays of any kind, but could she still be in the normal range of not doing this?? Thanks so much!!!

Sure she is in normal range...for her. My son didn't shake his head no until more like 18 months. He didn't clap until around then and he just started waving bye-bye....but he sat up, crawled and walked early and is very bright. It's hard to not compare, but you go with your instincts b/c that is never wrong.

Rejoice! All my 3 year old says is no and my youngest copies him and shakes his head. He's 20 months and has only been doing it the last four months so I wouldn't worry. Maybe she's better at other things. My first was slow to start talking but better at physical things. My second walked at 9 months old and was climbing at just under a year so it didn't bother me if he could shake his head or not. Maybe you just have an extremely agreeable and well behaved tot :)

Wow, you're worrying way too much over nothing. Seriously.

Physical movements are learned, she will mimic what she sees. Chances are that you don't shake your head at her lots, because you say yes to her tons :) This isn't bad.

If you want her to learn a specific body movement do it in front of your child and she will mimic eventually. Much like if you want a baby to smile you smile at her.

Also try not to compare your child too much over little things, your friend's child could know how to shake their head no, but suck at math for example. Everyone has their thing. Maybe you should teach your child how to wink, then you can one up them :)

Good Luck and happy parenting to you.

It's completely fine. My daughter started nodding and shaking her head at 14 months and she only did it for a couple months then stopped again.

My son is 14 months and has never shaken his head. He knows how to wave, but doesnt do that much either. Every baby is different, you can't follow any list.
