Let me answer your second question first. "Reverent Fear" is simply a way to water down the FEAR GOD command. THey simply are stating that this fear is to be a reverence for God or a RESPECT for God.

You are commanded to FEAR GOD because you should fear God. This command is to remind us that there is consequences for our choices in life. If you FEAR GOD in your life you LISTEN to what he has to say. FEARING GOD, means that what GOD says, God means, and you will follow.

Now it doesn't mean that you should live in constant anxiety due to the presence of God. When you FEAR GOD you are simply recognizing his authority in your life. He is the KING of the UNIVERSE and you are His humble servant. It is only by HIS grace that you can survive in his presence.

When you FEAR GOD you will properly give him the worship he deserves and you will be more apt at living out your life as he desires.

There are consequences for not following God's will for your life.

It means a reverential fear, in that you honor him in your life...Not a fear like you are afraid of Him as the mean cop in the sky..He is a good God.

Unless you have the Holy Spirit of God in your heart and life, your mind will remain alienated from the truth of God. That's why people think that God has a big stick, in fact if you believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, He enables you to receive the Light and the Love that will enlighten our hearts, if not, well to put it quite frankly you remain in the squalor and darkness of your own alienated mind, just look around us and we can see plenty examples of the things that alienate us from God, war, death, illness, crime, immorality just to list a few. The Bible says that people prefer the darkness to the light, perhaps it's because they want to be god of their own lives and can do or think how they want, at the end of the day each of us have to work out our own Salvation with trembling and with Fear..wonderful that may be for some, ridiculous it may be for the many. Peace.

We should fear Him with 'reverential' fear...

He is the One who is able to kill both the body and the soul

I think the context of a human being in a relationship with a God that demands to be worshipped 'or else' is one of unquestioning obedience.

There is no 'how or why', because there is no doubt. There is only the command to fear 'or else'.

Read the Old Testament if thy is in need of clarification. Joshua is a good place to start.

It is speaking of the kind of "fear" that you have for your parents. Part of it is because they can punish you. Part of it is because you do not want to disappoint them.

The "fear" of God is this same kind of a "reverents" or "respect" that you have for a parent. In fact, many modern translations use the word "respect" rather then "fear" when translating it. (The word "fear" has changed in the 400 years since the KJ Bible was translated).

Fear comes from the KJV dynamic translation in the 16th century. A dynamic translation is one where the language choices are weighed to the common vernacular or how the common person speaks. Fear in in the 16th century also meant or connotated "respect", and this is what it means in these passages.

If you are going to follow a religion, I highly recommend understanding the history and translation processes for your holy book.

It isn't fear the way we think of fear. It is awe, as we come to realize just what God actually is, as opposed to all the many concepts and beliefs surrounding Him. There is nothing to compare, and nothing that came before remains.
