i just colored my hair for thr first time at the salon. i already have my favorite shampoo and conditioner-neutrogena triple moisture. but it does not say those little words-safe for color treated hair. how important is this? or is this a scam so i'll go buy the $12 redken for color treated hair.?

Go to a Walmart salon and buy the professional products for color treated hair there - I believe is is BASIC - it works great and costs about the same as the Redken but will last 2-3xs longer.

A lot of shampoos are harsh on hair because of certain chemicals. Safe for color treated hair shampoos have a different component that is not so harsh on the color. When you use a shampoo that is not made for color, the color does not wash out but it becomes dull and a brassy color.

The best thing to do after you first color your hair...is wait at least 48 hours before you wash it ....let the hair come back to it's natural PH... give the color time to set ... allow the cuticle on your hair to close on it's own....make sure that when you do shampoo you use a moisturizing shampoo and a good conditioner ...use cool water and only shampoo once.. condition to follow and then rinse it in cool water..........keeps your color in and makes the hair look so shiny.............

Definately use shampoo for color treated hair. Its not a scam to get you to buy their products. If its not professional products your using then most salons wont even guarentee the color. Yes it does tone down a bit after awhile. but if your not using prof. products it can strip it out. over the counter products (like at walmart) have a lot of alcohol and wax in their products and their not guarenteed. professional is!

Some shampoos & conditioners for color-treated hair allow the color to last longer. If you find your current products caused your color to fade, or your hair was brittle and dry, then I would change. It's not necessary unless you're unhappy with how your hair looks. I would give it some time.

Some claim that normal shampoos may wash away the colour and make it dull, which is why most people use colour safe shampoo.

I personally don't think it makes much of a difference as long as you condition it properly. The colour will get dull regardless of what time of shampoo you you, it will deteriorate over time.

I too have coloured hair and I thought the same, but it is best to use shampoo for colour treated hair. Redken is a good one, I use that.

It is best to use color treated formulas, if not use gentle shampoo like baby shampoo or Aussie.
