My puppy is almost 8 months old and often messes during the night when she goes to bed. She doesn't do it in the house at any other time. She goes out for a walk last thing before bed. Help!!

She is such a good little pup all the other time. It's not a cse of me not getting up in the night to take her out as she doesn't make a murmur so I don't know what time she does it. I have tried getting up in the night but it hasn't helped. Crate training it is. Thanks

There is no particular age for house training to be effective. Was your puppy crate trained? If she was, then put her back into her crate at night, take her out first thing in the morning. Once she gets used to the routine, the problem should be fixed, and you can leave her out of the crate. Crate training is the most effective way to potty train a puppy (or even older dogs) because it gets the dog used to your routine and when they should expect to go outside. They won't go to the bathroom in their crates.

Was she crate trained? Does she let you know when she has to go out at any other time during the day? Pay attention to her body language when she does. If she barks, and I know this sounds stupid, but ask her if she needs to go out. She'll know the word "out" and probably get excited.
Puppies, like kids, have small bladders, so they have to go out often. Unless you want to get up in the middle of the night, I suggest crate training. Don't feed her right before bed, and maybe extend your nightly walk a little bit so she spends another few minutes outside.
Good luck, and I hope that helps.

Typically you can add 1 to your dogs age in months to estimate how long they can go between potty breaks. Your dog is 8 months old so she can go about 9 hours. This is only an estimate. It also has to do with when they eat and drink. Feed your pup on a regular schedule and don't leave the bowl down all day for her to graze. When you control when the food goes in you can predict when it is coming out.
Other than that, many dogs get urninary infections at that age. They are struggling to hold their bladders and they get infections. You may want to have her checked if it appears like she is desperate to pee and can't.

My puppy was exactly 4mo. when she started "holding" it and waiting till morning. She no longer needs to be crated at night and has turned into such a good girl! 8 mo. is a little old to be still pottying inside.
Have you crate trained your dog? If not, she should be crated at night and will not want to relieve herself in her own bed.
Another problem could be her food schedule. No food after 6/7pm and no water about an hour before bed.
i hope it helps!

My two ***** puppies are now 10 months and still mess at night (and sometimes in the day too even though I take them out regularly) Mys sister's ***** was 2 years old before she stopped doing it! Like all animals, they vary. No point trying to train them if they are not physically developed enough to control their own functions. Some just take longer than others. Interestingly, bitches seem to be worse than dogs. The computer has replaced the proper word for female dogs with asterisks!!!!

does she jump at the door usually when she needs to go out??? if she does, hang a bell on the door nob so it rings when she has to go, she'll associate the ring with going potty, and you'll hear the bell and it'll wake you up. Works like a charm with my 5 month old black lab!!! if she doesn't go to the door on her own when she need to go potty, crate her at night until she is able to hold it all night, and she knows to go to the door.
puppy's are tough, not all breeds learn to be house trained by the same age, some are more stubborn than others. The most important thing to remember is to stay consistent!
good luck!!

Usually 10 months to a year is a good reference for them to be 'mostly' house trained. Try letting her out for a final pee a little later at night, and getting up a little earlier in the morning. As this starts to work, slowly start changing the times you bring her out. When we got out pups, I kept them downstairs until they were older. I'd sleep on the couch. There were many nights they would wake me up at 2 or 4 or 6 because they had to go out. Now, they get a final out at 10 pm, and they're fine until 7 or 8 in the morning.

She may still not be able to hold it through the night- How long do you sleep?
I would get up and let her out either early in the morning or the middle fo the night. Puppies (even up to a year and a half) can only hold from 4-8 hrs. Some adult dogs still can't even hold it 12 hrs (which isn't healthy for them to do all the time anyways)
