We treat ourselves to a seafood dish, every other weekend. Mussels,Squid,Prawns,Scallops etc., 3 weeks ago (at age 61) I had my first Oyster, (well 2 actually, I wasn't sure I enjoyed the first one) I discovered that I did not really enjoy them so let my partner eat the rest. He was fine but, 36hrs later, I was violently ill. I also had a rash at the base of my neck. I was off work for 2 days which is not like me at all. Question is ,was this a result of eating 2 Oysters and a bad reaction or, a bad stomach upset? Does it take 36 hrs to come through, so to speak?

Yes, it could easily have been the oyster, especially if you ate it raw. It could also have been an allergic reaction. Often, allergic reactions are delayed, by up to 48 hours, and that is why they are often misdiagnosed. If your mind is suggesting it was the oysters, it likely was. Your body has many ways of telling you what you can and cannot tollerate. I would avoid oysters in the future, as next time, the reaction could be worse

Oysters are normally quite passive creatures. Occasionally you'll come across one that objects to being eaten alive. Wouldn't you?
Don't eat oysters when there's an 'R' in the month, used to be the rule, but these days they're farmed, so it's probably not such a problem. You might have an oyster allergy. I love oysters and all shellfish. As yet I haven't had a problem.

Food poisoning can be instant or can take a few days. No matter, it's not good or fun. It's really too bad that you're first oysters made you sick. They can be wonderful! You could, though, be allergic to them. If you really want to know you might see an allergist. Was there anything else on the platter that you ate that your partner didn't?

Yes, sometimes foodborne illness does take a while to show symptoms. Some illnesses are unique to eating raw fish/shellfish. You could easily have contracted a bacteria and not known it. You may also, without even knowing it, be part of a high-risk group, who are even more sensitive to the dangers of raw fish/shellfish.

i have never had a bad experience with oysters, but i have had a really funny one. maybe it will cheer you up! me and my grandfather were at a red lobster down in maryland and he ordered oysters. it was good-tasting to him, but on the second to last one he ate, he found there was a pearl in his mouth! i'm glad he didn't swallow, but it still has bite marks from 4 years ago.
