Found the most beautiful dog and we just started noticing worms in his feces. In the process of making an appt for the vet, but just wanted to know the cause and seriousness of the condition.

It really depends on the type of parasite. What did they look like? Do they look like small grains of rice? The reason I am asking is because people can usually only see one type without a microscope. If this is the type you have seen, they are tapeworms and are a result of flea infestation. They can usually be treated with one injection by the Veterinarian. However, you will need to make sure the dog and your environment is free of fleas or he will become reinfected later on.
There are several types of intestinal parasites in dogs (worms), and taking him to the vet is the best decision you could have made. A fecal test is inexpensive and all parasites can be treated and destroyed. Almost all dogs get parasites at least once in their lifetime. In the meantime, keep him away from other dogs, and if he has tapeworms you need to keep him off the furniture until he is worm free (this is the only type of parasite that can be transmitted to humans). Don't freak out! Just get him treated ASAP and both of you will be fine! Hope this helps. If you need additional info, you can send me an email.

Good Luck!

What you are seeing is likely tapeworms, but a stool sample should be taken to the vet and tested as the dog could be harbouring other internal parasites as well. Please clean up any stool from your yard immediately as some parasites can live in the soil for years and re-infect the dog and people.
If hooks and whips are found in the stool sample it is a good idea to do a second fecal test after the deworming to ensure all have be taken care of sometimes it can take 3 or more dewormings to get rid of completely, using a heartworm med with a dewormer can help prevent re - infestation

I'm not sure what school Danielle the former vet tech who posted earlier went to, but tapeworms are the least of the worries, hookworms, Coccidia, and Giardia are much more serious health concerns to humans

This site has good info about internal parasites and the risk to humans

All of my rescue cats & dogs have had some kind of worm in their stool. Depending on the parasite it is extremely easy for a veterinarian to get rid of. Just make sure that you clean extensively and wash your hands a lot, or don't eat the poo (don't think you would). Humans can contract the pariscites as well.

congratulations on getting a dog!

Worms are parasites. They can transmit diseases to your pets as well as drain them of vital energy/nutrients. A heavy infestation can lead to malnutrition, anemia, and even death if bad enough.

Getting your dog to the vet is the right move. Thankfully worm infestations are easy enough to control and prevent.

Just get her in to the vet for a fecal and her shots and she should be fine. If you see the worms its probably tape or round worms.

Real bad. Have the vet de-worm him.

yes it is. My dog died from it. Also dont let the dog lick your face ( around your mouth) or it can pass the worms on to you. that happend to my younger brother.
