It happens to me quite often! I don't know why but it hurts like hell and I have to wake up and shake my leg and massage it until it stops hurting. What can I do about it?

one banana isnt going to help. I have the same problem, although it comes and goes. I was told to stretch my leg muscles before bed, but not right before bed, like a few hours before and drink lots of water!!!! a banana everyday will help too or potasium tablets will do the trick too. what you have are called charlie horses and they are a sign of dehidration or lack of potasium.

OMG I get that too & HATE when that happens!! It hurts soooo bad!! It's called a "Charlie Horse" & even though it still hurts to do it, the only way to make it go away other than massaging it really hard is to get up & walk on it. For a while I was too afraid to do that because I was in so much pain but I've found it makes it go away muuuch faster than just sitting there almost motionless & massaging it. I'm told that it's due to a Potassium deficiency. To help prevent it from happening more often in the future, eat more bananas because they are chock full of Potassium.

Lack of calcium or dehydration--most likely dehydration. Drink at least 8 glasses of water a day and cut back on alcohol which dehydrates you. This happened to me--the hydration really works!

Restless Legs and Night Cramps are separate issues but have many of the same treatments.

One is Quinine, which I think comes in the form of a bottle like bottled water. Look in your drug store. AND....

A weird treatment that many people swear upon from cramps and restless legs...it's weird but it works for so many people so don't dismiss it...

A bar of soap under your sheets. Yes, just put a bar of soap under your fitted sheet around the area of your legs. Any soap but Ivory or Zest.
It didn't work so much for my Restless Legs, but it does help enough people (including my Mom) that I still believe in it's power and will still recommend it.

Eat more potassium (e.g., bananas) or take a multivitamin with potassium. This used to happen to me all the time until my doctor told me it was because I wasn't getting enough potassium.

Eat some bananas, a "Charlie horse" as I was taught to call it, is cause by a lack of potassium.

This is very common and all you have to do is get up and walk it off or sit up and rub it..it will hurt like hell but will get rid of it for sure

I DO. MY DOC TOLD ME I NEEDED MORE VITAMIN'S AND I SHOULD EAT BANANAS TO GET MORE POTASSIUM.
I STRETCH MY LEG BEFORE I GO TO BED OR SOAK IN A WARM BATH.THIS HAS HELPED ME. YOU MAY WANT TO DISCUSS WITH YOUR DOC.
GOOD LUCK !!

Try magnesium, or better still take a multi vitimin. Also check that you are not anemic.

if you did any rigourous activity or lots of walking your legs can cramp up...try to stretch a little before going to bed..
