Perhaps the difference arises because of the socialized health care system in Canada? In the United States, parents pay for health care and, therefore, have the legal right to make decisions about their children's health care until they turn 18. Believe me, after that (if they are in college) parents don't have any say about the health decisions but still have to pay the bills!

I am a parent of two grown children. Speaking as a parent, if I am responsible for my child until adulthood, then I should have input into their decisions until they're considered an adult. Besides, there are some things that a 14 yr old may want to do and at 20 regret it. Example: my daughter wanted her eyebrow pierced when she was 15. I told her she could have it done when she was 18 if she still wanted to do it. When she was 19, she thanked me for not letting her get it done when she was younger.

Parents do have a responsibility to guard over, protect, and oversee the decisions of their children. At 14, they still need guidance from their parents.

Because here in the USA, parents are held responsible for the actions of their children until that child reaches the age of 18. If my child who was 14-15 wanted to have an elective surgery or is taking some type of medication and there is an adverse effect, *I* would be held responsible for that and could be faced with charges of child neglect. I personally don't think CHILDREN of that age are generally mature enough to act in their own best interests. Let me decide what's best for my own kid, thank you very much.

I understand that it's their body and that they should have some say in decisions made about their health care. However, most teens don't understand the long term effects of many issues. Teens think their 10 ft. tall and bullet proof. The don't think about how pain killers such as vicodin or percocet addictions can ruin their liver and wreck their lives.
I don't think they need to try and be in total control of things until they are a bit older.
For heaven sake they're still just kids.

Parents are responsible for their children until they reach the age of consent, which is 18. Up until that time, they DO need to be aware of ANY decisions concerning that child, because it could come back to bite them in the proverbial a*s*s*.

They never took away any right. Legally, parents are responsible for the actions of their children until they reach 18. How can you have them responsible then not allow them to make decosions about it? That seems very unreasonable to me.
